2019 WSOP Player of the Year Drama Unfolds

Daniel Negreanu has been fending off attacks on his integrity after the WSOP Player of the Year standings were found to be incorrect. Both Shaun Deeb and Doug Polk claimied DNegs must have known about the mistake that originally gave him the title ahead of Robert Campbell.

Deeb, who was part of the tense three-way race to the Player of the Year accolade at the recent WSOP Europe in Rozvadov, went as far as to state that Negreanu had been caught ‘trying to cheat’.

As we explained in our weekend article, an error in the WSOP PoY standings was discovered by Russian journalist Alex Elenskiy.

The WSOP team had erroneously mixed up two of their summer events in Vegas and incorrectly credited Negreanu with extra leaderboard points.

This crucial, but fairly basic, error meant that Robert Campbell became the true winner of the PoY race. Shaun Deeb bumped up to second, and DNegs now third.

Negreanu was quick to congratulate Campbell. He described him in a tweet as a ‘well-deserved champ’, but others were soon hunting for Negreanu’s blood.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic though. Plenty of players and fans stood up for Negreanu. Jaime Staples was one of the biggest names to support his former PokerStars colleague.

Daniel Negreanu’s WSOP Player of the Year Blog Post

By this point, Negreanu had already released a blog post explaining his views, as had Campbell, the newly-named winner among those who believed Negreanu to be completely innocent of any ‘charges’.

That didn’t stop ShuanDeeb from airing his own anti-KidPoker views once again, this time on the Joe Ingram podcast…

…stating among other comments: “If there is a chance he [Negreanu] did this maliciously and tried to take advantage of the situation…making that vlog…insulting me personality-wise and so many low blows…that really shows how fake of a person he really is.”

While the Deeb and Polk complaints and allegations can be put down to long-standing feuds with Negreanu, the former was in serious contention for the title.

Believing he needed to finish at least 5th in the final Colossus event at the WSOPE, Deeb may well have approached things differently had he known the true state of affairs.

Next year, however, will be a different story according to Deeb. He has been desperate for back-to-back Player of the Year title wins.
