WSOP Day 22 – Phil Hellmuth Falls Short in WSOP Bracelet Hunt

It was close but no celebratory cigar for Phil Hellmuth in Las Vegas last night, the 17-time bracelet winner falling just short of number 18 with a 4th-place finish in the Mixed Omaha event.

Event #43: $1,500 Mixed Omaha (7-Handed)

Having watched Phil Ivey move into clear second last week in the all-time gold bracelet winner’s list with an 11th WSOP victory, Hellmuth found himself on a deep run as he chased his own 18th piece of WSOP jewellery.

Big Phil was among 23 players to return for day 2 of a tournament that involves rounds of Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, and Big O.

Sixth in chips at the start of play, and on his mother’s birthday, the WSOP legend saw rivals such as Shaun Deeb (16th) and day 1 chip leader Dylan Lambe (6th) fall.

But there was to be no gold bracelet celebration after Hellmuth got it all-in on the flop, with the nut flush draw against Magnus Edengren’s aces…

Magnus Edengren: A♥ A♣ K♣ 10♣

Phil Hellmuth: A♠ 9♦ 2♠ 2♦

Flop: J♥ J♠ 8♠

Adding a low draw on the turn…

Turn: 5♦

…unfortunately for Hellmuth the river bricked…

River: 8♥

…and it was 4th place and no gold bracelet.

Phil’s obvious disappointment was smoothed over by a  visit from his great friend Steve Aoki and, of course, some more poker…

The final three players return today to decide who takes down the win and the $196,970 top prize.

With nine events in play at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas casinos, surprisingly there were no bracelets awarded yesterday at all, but as we’ve just seen that doesn’t mean there was a drop in the action.

Event #38: $1,500 Monster Stack No-Limit Hold’em

Perhaps better known as a highstakes player, divisive Czech pro Martiin Kabrhel found himself topping the chip counts as the Monster Stack was whittled down yet again.

Only 55 players remain in the hunt for the $1,098,220 top prize, with EPT founder John Duthie, Brazilian star Joao Simao and former GPI Female Player of the Year Nadya Magnus all still in the hunt.

A host of bracelet winners busted towards the end of day’s play, England’s Jack Sinclair among them, but Barry Shulman is still in with a chance of gold #3 and the $410,359 top prize.

Event #46: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold’em Championship

Day 1a of the Seniors’ event saw almost 5000 players at the tables, with another starting flight scheduled for today. A prizepool of over $10million is a realistic possibility, and nobody under the age of 50 is eligible to win a cent of it!

The big boys and girls (well, girl, Kathy Lehne the only female entrant so far) took to the felt with the biggest buy-in of the 2024 Series so far, otherwise SHR persona non grata Jake Schindler among the $100k buy-in crowd.

Day 1 numbers already exceeded last year’s total entry, and Daniel Negreanu was responsible for two bullets, though painfully both times ran into aces! However, it was a different problem that had him taking to X/Twitter to complain…
