WSOP 2024 Day 40 – Phil Ivey Joins the Record Main Event Fray

Day 1d of the WSOP 2024 Main Event saw Phil Ivey joining a field of 5,014 to create the biggest Day 1 field in Main Event history.

The impressive turnout saw an unthinkable field of 9,288 players stump up the $10,000 to play, proving that poker is as popular as it’s ever been.

With late registration continuing into Day 2, many are confident that the overall record field of 10,043 entries will be beaten.

Phil Ivey Survives Main Event Day 1

Phil Ivey ended the Day 1d of the Main Event with a solid stack of 162,500 (203 big blinds). Still some way off the leaders but it’s a massive stack with a long way to go.

Ari Engel also bagged up a nice stack of 209,400 along with plenty of previous WSOP Main Event champions.

And it was a day for many big names of the past era, including a few Poker Hall of Fame members.

Scotty Nguyen, Brian Rast, John Juanda, and Barry Greenstein all survived the hustle and bustle of Day 1.

Chance Kornuth Challenging for Fourth Bracelet

The Main Event might be taking centre stage, but there are other events scheduled to run alongside.

Event #82: $1,000 No Limit Hold’em saw 1,424 players register to play on Day 1, creating a prize pool of $1,253,120.

In the early hours of the morning, that number had reduced to 214 with Chance Kornuth completing a great run to line up on Day 2 as one of the main challengers with 501,000 chips.

Daniel Olsen is the current chip leader with 677,000. Other notable players who reached Day 2 are Sammy Farha, Dara O’Kearney, and David Peters.

All players who return have reached the prize money with a min-cash being worth $2,004.

Tomorrow’s play will see Event #84: $600 Ultra Stack No-Limit Hold’em and Event #83: $1,500 Eight Game Mixed (6-Handed) kicking off with the latter event expecting to see Shaun Deeb return to defend his title after busting out of the Main Event already.
