The WPT World Championship has completed its first five days of action, whittling a field of 2,392 down the final six.
Online MTT superstar Chris Moorman has run deep for the second consecutive year, currently sitting in second place just behind chip leader Eddie Pak.
Day 3 kicked off with 299 players, all of which had secured a min-cash of $19,600. By the end of the day, there were 61 contenders left.
Day 4 whittled down those 61 to only 16 with Moorman seizing the chip lead to become a clear favourite given his career record.
Last night saw only 10 players leave the stage after a long and drawn out battle on Day 5.
It’s tough to look past Chris Moorman at this stage, being as polite about the other five players’ abilities as we can.
He finished in fourth place last year and looks in untouchable form this year.
When asked if it felt like a bit of poker déjà vu, Moorman said:
“Yeah, it feels like it. Obviously with the big ballroom, and I seem to run good at the Wynn. Even the one in the summer, the Wynn $10K I came in 17th place as well. So it’s three $10Ks in a row at the Wynn that I’ve run deep in all of them.”
He noted that one difference was the re-entry he had to stump up for this year but we’re sure he can afford it.
It’s not all rose, though, because Moorman told reporters about how much he hates Day 1 starting flights.
“A hundred percent. I hate Day 1s in live poker. It’s just so slow to me and I want to late register because I know I’m not going to play well if I’m there from the start. But once it’s Day 2 in any live tournament or a Sunday online, I’m pumped for it.
“It’s like Christmas for me, Christmas Day. I wouldn’t be here still if I didn’t enjoy it. The minute I don’t, I won’t be here but my friends joke that I’m going to be playing the Main Event for the rest of my life. And I agree.”
At the end of the interview, Moorman was keen to tell how he isn’t getting ahead of himself with plenty of poker still to come.
“I mean, it’s cliché but you just take it one hand at a time, try not to get ahead of yourself. Obviously, you’ve got a lot of people wishing you good luck but there’s just so much poker other than be played between not and [the final table] so you just try and play your best.
“There’s going to be setbacks along the way and you just have to recover from them and just try to do your best…find some little exploits here and there. Just keep in the moment.”
As for Eddie Pak, he has a career earnings record of $431,609 and only four cashes prior to 2023. Will he be overawed at the prospect of what awaits him tonight?
He did admit that Moorman is clearly his most feared opponent but he still feels good about his own game and will continue with the same plan from the previous five days.
