VIP-Grinders Guide to the 2024 WSOP

The 2024 World Series of Poker is only 75 days away now. And it won’t be long before players are getting ready for their annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas.

On May 28, at midday, the tradition call to “shuffle up and deal” for Event #1: $5,000 Champions Reunion No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout (8-Handed) will mark the beginning of the series hosted at the  Horseshoe and Paris Hotel & Casino .

As ever, players of different backgrounds and abilities will arrive with their individual hopes and dreams intact. And, as is a mandatory truth of our game, not all will be leaving as happy as they arrived.

But we will also see many dreams made. Some players will be heading home in possession of life-changing money. Some will make their mark at the pinnacle of the game.

Others will be holding a cherished WSOP gold bracelet that they worked hard to attain for many years. And there will be many who simply made the trip just to experience the iconic series as a one off.

2024 WSOP

99 Bracelet Events at 2024 WSOP

There will be a record 99 bracelet events scheduled during the summer. All split between the most popular variants of poker.

There will also be plenty of new variations so far unseen at the WSOP. PLO players will be particularly excited to learn that the five-card version will now have a $10,000 championship event.

The Mystery Bounty variant is proving incredibly popular so far and so the organisers have decided to run with a PLO event alongside the NL tournament which everyone loved last year.

Those of us who get a little bored playing the same game all of the time are always on the lookout for mixed games.

For the high rollers, a $10,000 8-game event is certain to be a popular addition.

And, what  we think is the most exciting new event this year, has to be the NL hold’em PLO mix with a “Double Board Bomb Pot”.

The first round of each game has a massive ante that is guaranteed to spark some fireworks.

Ty Stewart, SVP and Executive Director of the World Series of Poker, said:

“There’s not much more that can be said about what a special year 2023 was for the WSOP and the game of poker. But it’s time to turn the page and begin the countdown to 2024. Records are made to be broken.

“We’re busy on improvements to make sure 2024 is both the biggest and best event in poker history. Mark your calendars and bank those vacation days. We’ll see you in Vegas.”

More Small Buy-in Events At the 2024 WSOP

Players who are looking at the cheaper end of the schedule won’t be disappointed this year.

The $300 Gladiators of Poker event kicks off on June 6 with four starting flights and a massive $3,000,000 guarantee.

Three weeks later, there will be the $400 buy-in Colossus. Last year this monster event attracted a whopping 15,879 entries and paid the winner a cool $501,120.

There will also be regular satellites for events that carry a buy-in outside of a player’s bankroll management.

Another interesting addition to the 2024 WSOP is what is known as the “landmark” satellite format.

Rather than outlasting a certain number of opponents, players must aim to achieve a specific amount of chips. When this amount is reached, that player’s stack is removed from the event and play continues.

Who Will Shine at the 2024 WSOP?

One of the highlights of the World Series of Poker is the Player of the Year leaderboard.

Will it be an old hand who has crushed for many years, or will it be a, rising star making a name for themselves?

Record 17-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth is one player who puts everything into his schedule to challenge for the Player of the Year title but will the format be right for him?

Every year we hear arguments about how the rules are not fair and reward players who min-cash too much.

Former Player of the Year winner Shaun Deeb says it is being looked at but no changes have been confirmed yet.

Can Phil Hellmuth win a record 18th gold bracelet? It’s always on the cards, for sure, but will this be his year after some great performances over the last few years.

Daniel Negreanu is poised to become the new leader of the WSOP All-time money list if he can pull out a couple of good results. A “mere” quarter of a million dollars will see that mission accomplished.

The Main Event

The real highlight of any WSOP is the $10,000 Main Event. Whoever wins that tournament becomes instantly recognisable in the poker community.

Last year’s edition saw a record-breaking number of entries after 10,043 players built a prize pool of $93,399,900.

Daniel Weinman was the winner and he banked a record $12.1 million; the biggest prize since Jamie Gold won back in 2006.

There is never any notable favourite in this iconic tournament. In fact, since the poker boom kicked off, the winner is usually an unknown player.

This year, the “big one” will start on July 3 with the usual four starting flights.
