Another 6 Venmo accounts of poker players hacked
High stakes tournament crusher Ben Lamb has reported another Venmo hacking scandal on Twitter. The American said that five of his friends messaged him about a hack and then partypoker ambassador Tony Dunst replied to say the same happened to him recently.
5 people have messaged me today saying their @venmo has been hacked and Venmo won’t even give them a proper response today. Exit scam ???

Ben Lamb Suggests Venmo Exit Scam
With so many people getting scammed on the Venmo social payment app, it’s a surprise that so many high stakes poker players continue to use the company. After all it’s not like we are short of online payment options in 2021.
When there is no reply from the support team from a company owned by Paypal, people are right to start asking if there is something untoward going on here.
Ben Lamb even suggested the possibility of an exit scam. That might seem far out there considering who owns Venmo, but stranger things have happened.
Poker Players Encouraged to Ditch Venmo
This whole circus began back in November 2020 when Erik Seidel and Daniel Negreanu posted on Twitter that they had been hacked.
In a brazen show of cheekiness, one of the thieves stole $15,000 from Negreanu and then tried to pay for a $43 Uber ride when the account was already emptied. Seidel reported that Venmo support were slow to respond.
Poker players, I highly recommend that you cash out your @Venmo accounts and close them immediately
Many poker player accounts have been hacked, and it’s a nightmare to even get support to respond to you
My account was first hacked in November…
— Bonologic (@JustinBonomo) February 19, 2021
Only a couple of months later, Justin Bonomo warned his Twitter followers to ditch Venmo. He told how he had been hacked in November and immediately again once he regained control of his account in January 2021.
“On two separate occasions, months apart, my account was being hacked in front of my eyes. I IMMEDIATELY emailed them to let them know, asking them to freeze my account. I didn’t get a response for over a week”
What’s Really Happening?
It was suggested in the Twitter thread that what’s happening here is not just password guessing, but more likely brute force hacking. This is obviously concerning to see in a legit banking institution.
When these thefts occur, the victim isn’t always a super-rich high stakes poker player. Normal people are getting ripped off and can struggle to get back what is rightfully theirs.
Even a savvy guy Ike Haxton tweeted for advice, asking if he should close his Venmo account when he doesn’t keep a balance on there. He was informed that hackers can still move funds around from banks connected to the app.
Any budding poker players out there who read this story shouldn’t worry that the online poker world has these sorts of issues on any regular basis. This is purely regarding the Venmo app that just happens to be used by poker players.
