Tom Dwan Responds to Phil Hellmuth Claim at 2008 NBC National Heads-Up Championship that He Won’t Be Around in 5 Years

Tom Dwan has responded to a question about what he thinks about Phil Hellmuth suggesting he won’t be around in a few years back in 2008.

Hellmuth got a bit cocky with Dwan when he was the new kid on the block and taunted him during a match suggesting he was nothing more than a flash in the pan.

The match in question was the 2008 National Heads-up Championship. Hellmuth squared up against the fresh-faced 21-year-old Dwan and was determined to give him some of his famous needling table talk.

The Poker Brat said:

“We’ll see if you’re even around in five years. I don’t think you will be. That’s the truth!”

Of course, even back then the youngsters know what Hellmuth was all about. Dwan was also reaching ever greater heights month-by-month it seemed, so it was doubtful he was bothered in any way.

In an interview with fellow high-stakes reg Nick Schulman, a fan sent in a question asking what Dwan would say to Hellmuth if he could go back in time to that match. Dwan responded,

“You know I don’t think i’d say anything. I’d just sit back and watch it.”

“I don’t think I’m the first person that’s been annoyed by Phil Hellmuth before. But as I’ve got to know him better he is that same person on TV, but the dude has a heart.”
