Scott Stewart emerged victorious in the $10,000 WPT World Championship, seeing off his 2,391 rivals to claim a winner’s prize of $2,563,900.
The American defeated Rob Sherwood heads-up to claim the career-best prize, almost fives times his previous best from all the way back in 2017.
Chris Moorman couldn’t pull off the result he was hoping for but another fourth place in such an event is still a fantastic performance and it earned him $1,150,000.
Action Recap
The action started off with plenty of big pots, including a knockout. Stewart picked up aces and managed to get the chips in pre-flop against Christian Roberts.
A flopped flush draw gave some cause for concern but it came to nought and we were down to five already in the first orbit.
In the very next hand it was lights out for Ryan Yu after he jammed pocket nines and was called off by Eddie Pak whose ace-king did the job with two pair on the flop. Yu took home $875,000 for his efforts.
Rob Sherwood put a dent in Moorman’s hopes in the next hand when his pocket queens triumphed over the Brit’s sixes.
Some start, to say the least!
We did get a few hands with small pots before Moorman got his chips in again. On a jack-jack-7 flop he went with his queens and was called by Pak who had tens.
It looked good but a ten on the turn sent Moorman home and we were down to the final three players.
The next phase took a whopping three hours. The players agreed to fudge the prizes to dampen the pay jumps. With so much at stake we can hardly blame them.
Pak was next to leave when a hero call with queen high failed with Stewart holding a full house. The American banked $2,000,000.
Stewart had around a two-to-one advantage over Rob Sherwood going into heads-up and extended his lead consistently during the early rounds to seven-to-one.
A double-up kept Sherwood in play and he went on a heater of his own to even the stacks and later take a large advantage.
It all came to a head after five hours of intense play when Stewart picked up kings at the right moment. Sherwood only had sixes and his stack was all but gone.
Two hands later, Scott Stewart was crowned a WPT champion much to the delight of his friends and fans on the rail.
