Sascha Wilhelm has won the inaugural Event #86: $1,000 Mystery Bounty Pot-Limit Omaha after a nail-biting unscheduled final day.
The German amateur only had a handful of live tournament cashes between 2013 to 2015 prior to today but now he has his first bracelet and a $282,290 winners prize.
The large score is four times Wilhelm’s previous career total and no doubt is the best day of his poker life.
Event #86: $1,000 Mystery Bounty Pot-Limit Omaha was scheduled to end yesterday but with the contenders refusing to release their grasps on the title it all came down to a nail-biter today.
The event saw 4,280 entrants sign up on Day 1, creating a handsome prize pool of $3,616,800 that included the bounties.
Final Action
Wilhelm had a slow start to the unscheduled day but soon got to work when the final table was formed.
Israel’s Oshri Lahmani went almost immediately and was soon followed by Brandon Caputo after he clashed with Wilhelm.
Bryce Yockey started the session as one of the favourites with his $6 million earnings total and already having won a bracelet on Day 4 of the WSOP 2024.
But it wasn’t to be for the American because even after doubling up with pocket aces James Cavanaugh sent him home in seventh place with a $44,530 prize.
One by one the contenders started to fall, with Daisuke Ogita knocking out several players until Wilhelm stalled his progress.
The champion doubled up through his Japanese rival and then eliminated him in a top set versus straight confrontation when the river was a blank that didn’t pair the board.
Into heads-up play, observers couldn’t see a way for Cavanaugh to recover the significant disadvantage he faced.
By now the German sensed the moment was his and he relentlessly applied pressure until the job was finished.
In the final hand, it was Wilhelm holding the set against the straight of Cavanaugh, but this time the river was obliging and Wilhelm was champion.
