Roman ‘Romeopro’ Romanovsky is the new Number 1 online tournament player in the world

The online MTT world has a new leader. Chris “moorman1” Moorman’s spot on the top is still safe in terms of all time online tournament earnings – the British poker pro is currently at $15,851,900, over $1 million ahead of the Swedish Niklas “lena900” Åstedt.

However, the website that tracks these results, PocketFives, is running a different, more nuanced list to rank the world’s best online MTT players. On that leaderboard, we have a new player on top.

Roman Romanovsky Takes Over

The Ukrainian online poker pro, Roman Romanovsky, has been on a hell of a heater for the past few months. Romanonsky cashed in over 100 tournaments in March alone, for a total of over $550,000. His recent outstanding results include a 3rd place finish in a $5K buy-in event on Bwin for 105,000; winning a $10K and a $5K tournament on GGPoker for $104,500 and $87,130, respectively; and coming in 5th in another $5K tourney on Bwin for $58,025.

With all his recent success on the virtual felt, “Romeopro” Romanovsky has racked up over $12 million in lifetime online tournament earnings. That puts him in the 5th place on the all-time money list, as of now.

However, he managed to climb to the top on the PocketFives Leaderboard. He overtook the aforementioned “lena900” Åstedt from Sweden.

What Is the PockerFives LeaderBoard?

PocketFives is the largest and most visited database of online MTT results. On top of tracking lifetime online earnings, they also run their own leaderboard to rank the best online tournament players from around the world.

Instead of simply using total tournament cashes or ROI, PocketFives has a unique point system. According to their website, they use this formula to assign points to the players based on their MTT results:

Points = (PrizePool1/2) / (PlaceFinished3/5)

This means that they take the total prize pool of a tournament and divide it by the number of the position a player finished in. They even have a PLB (PokcetFives Leaderboard) point calculator on their website.

However, if you want to figure out how Romanovsky became number 1, the calculations don’t stop there.

In order to keep their list fresh, PocketFives uses so-called “sliding PLB points” to rank the players. This means that only the latest 40 cashes count. Also, the cashes are worth fewer and fewer points as time goes by. After a year, their value goes down to 0.

Who is the New “World’s Best” MTT Player?

Roman Romanovsky is a young player from Kyiv, Ukraine. He’s best known as his PokerStars screen name, Romeopro. He won most of his MTT winning on that site over $6.150 million. However, lately he has been mostly playing in smaller online poker rooms such as Bwin and GGPoker.

As for live tournaments, he has $429,940 in cashes total to his name. His biggest achievement there is winning a €2,000 EPT event in 2012.
