Rob Yong is calling for a single re-entry in online poker tournaments as the way forward for the game. The partypoker shareholder agrees that this change would be a positive step in securing the future health of the online tournament scene.
Just read @padsPokerSquad concern about re-entries & late reg to 5-10BBs..
Come on @PokerStars @GGPokerOfficial @888poker @ACR_POKER – let’s do right thing
1. Maximum 1 RE to any MTT (inc flighted)

Can Rob Yong Pull off a Coup?
The online MTT scene has evolved over the last few years. Whereas freezeout tournaments once accounted for the vast majority of the schedule, rebuy tournaments are now incredibly popular.
This change has not come without some complaints though.
The GG Network started a system to allow unlimited re-entries in late registration for a stack of around only 10 big blinds. This has proven to be popular judging by the numbers.
But as time has gone by players are starting to see drawbacks to how this affects the whole tournament ecosystem.
Another change that is being put forward is to give players at least 20 big blinds for their late re-entry.
This will go some way to cutting down on the number of “gamblers” who don’t intend to play real poker and only risk everything repeatedly in order to aim for a huge stack. Only giving 10 big blinds leaves players with almost no choice but to gamble.
No Rake For Re-Entries
The major sticking point for Rob Yong’s suggestions is the no rake policy for re-entries. For any major site to go down this path it would require unanimous agreement between all parties.
Can anybody really see the greedy PokerStars execs agreeing to this. It’s unlikely but we won’t know until this idea picks up some steam.
Currently there are complaints about players who can wield a huge bankroll to almost guarantee a deep run in these events.
“100% agree. It’s not fair that someone with a much larger bankroll can flip until reg closes and build a monster stack with no consequences. Make it fair to all!!!”
This is not how no limit texas hold’em is supposed to be played.
Doug Polk explained in a YouTube video that this system also guarantees that a higher percentage of the entrants left in the tournament will be good players.
Another point that is not brought up very often is the unpredictable length of these events.
Years ago players had a schedule that was predictable based on how deep they went in a tournament. Now, with unlimited re-entries this is almost impossible.
Will All Major Sites Agree with Yong?
To get unanimous agreement for a positive change from all major poker rooms would be an amazing coup for the game.
Those who get to make all the key decisions will be looking to see how much desire there is behind these changes.
Rob Yong is explicit when he says that partypoker are on board if everyone else agrees.
It’s been the case for years now that partypoker is a major driving force amongst the real money poker sites to make sure the players get what they want.
Yong tweeted,
“cause if only party do it, its small % of overall ecology – we need all major rooms to do what’s right for game”
It’s worth mentioning that high stakes tournament star Daniel Negreanu brought all this up six months ago.
The Canadian tweeted that he would only be playing a single bullet in all rebuy tournaments after the WSOPE was done.
This is extreme, because nobody is complaining about a single rebuy in an event designed for that, but at least we have a major site brand ambassador pushing for what is best.
