The latest episode of Poker After Dark is called “Feeding Franzi” and as the name implies Zach Franzi is running hot in this NL$100/$200 cash game. For our Poker Hand of the Week we picked a spot, where he manages to get maximum value with Top Set against the top pair of Nick Wright.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
The last Poker After Dark week is called “Feeding Franzi” and it features Maria Ho, Zach Franzi, Nick Wright, Joelle Parenteau, Hish Salama, Daniel Weinand and Eli Elezra.
They are playing 7-max $50/$100 No-Limit Hold’em with straddle.
Zach Franzi has Nick Wright clearly covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Zach Franzi raises from UTG to $300 with K♦K♣. Hish Salama with Q♦10♠, Daniel Weinand with A♣J♣ and Nick Wright holding K♠9♠ all call. Pot Size: $1,350
Flop:
4-way to the very interesting flop of K♥5♦8♠, which gives Jack Franzi Top Set and Nick Wright Top Pair.
Nick checks over to Zach, who makes a chooses a small continuation bet sizing of $400 (30% pot) and Wright check-calls. Everybody else folds. Pot Size: $2,150
Turn:
The 2♦ on the turn doesn’t change much, except for that it puts a flush draw out there. Nick Wright now decides to lead with a bet of $800 and Zach Franzi quickly makes it $2,600 to go. Wright calls. Pot Size: $7,350
River:
The 3♣ on the river is a total blank. Nick now checks, Zach goes for a big value bet of 82% pot and Wright calls it off. Zach Franzi get three streets of value and collects a nice $19,350 Pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s anaylse this hand step by step. Zach’s Preflop raise with Pocket Kings is absolute standard and so is Nick Wright’s call with K9s after two other players have called in front of him as he is getting very good pot odds.
The flop is an absolute dream for Zach Franzi, as it not only gives him the Nuts, but also makes his opponent top pair on a pretty dry board. Franzi chooses a very small cbet sizing, probably to induce a bluff later on in the hand. Nick Wright’s check-call with top pair against a UTG raise is standard.
What is absolutely not standard and quite surprising is that he leads out after a blank on the turn, since Franzi’s range after a UTG raise and a continuation bet into four people has him crushed. This opens the door for Zach to raise as well as to build the pot and maximize his value with the Nuts, while Wright calls drawing dead.
Another blank on the river and Zach Franzi goes for a big value bet of 82% pot, Nick Wright calls again and loses a comparatively big $19,350 pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
This hand shows how important is the ability to put your opponent on a range of hands as well as to play pot control, when you are not sure, where you stand.
The big mistake in this hand was the lead by Nick Wright on the turn as it gave Zach Franzi the chance to maximize his value, while holding the Nuts.
Nick Wright could have easily controlled the size of the pot by playing check-call, but through his inappropriate he ends up losing a 193,5 big blind pot with top pair no kicker against the nutted range of his opponent.
