In our Poker Hand of the Week we are analysing the wildest Phil Hellmuth Bluff You’ll Ever See with 83s against Daniel Negreanu on High Stakes Duel II Round 3
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
We are in the early stages of the High Stakes Duel II Round 3 Heads-Up Match between Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu, which is a Heads-Up Sit & Go format.
DNegs has won a decent sized pot, is off to a good start and has Hellmuth covered.
The Poker Brat tried a few plays, but couldn’t get much going so far, until this insane hand happened…
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Daniel raises from the Button with 2♦2♣ to $1,500 and Phil Hellmuth makes a lose 3-bet with 8♣3♣ to $4,800, just to have Negreanu come back over the top by making it $13,000 to go.
Normally you would expect that to be the end of the hand, but Hellmuth goes for the old 5-bet to $35,000. DNegs goes into the tank and then calls and just like that there are $70,000 (233bb) in the pot. Pot Size: $70,000
Flop:
The flop comes 10♦6♠J♣ and both players whiff. Hellmuth quickly checks and Negreanu decides to take a small $21,000 stab (30% pot) at it.
Phil Hellmuth check-calls the $21,000 and has only $105K behind. Pot Size: $112,000
Turn:
The 6♣ on the turn is a very interesting card as the board pairs and Phil picks up a flush draw. The Poker Brat leads out straight away for $42,000 sending Daniel into the tank.
After 1.5 minutes DNegs decides to lay it down and Phil Hellmuth wins a huge $154,000 pot with just eight-high!
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Sickest hand I have ever seen by Phil Hellmuth! Let’s go through it step by step.
Preflop this hand is a clear levelling war between Hellmuth and Negreanu. Both have big egos and try to outplay each other. Hellmuth 3-bet with 83s is clearly out of line and DNegs 4-bet a pretty strong play.
Very surprising is the 5-bet as you hardly ever see that from Hellmuth and it therefore looks insanely strong, but DNegs calls, since he is in position and gets a good price.
Another surprise is Hellmuth’s snap-check on the turn, as you would almost always make a continuation bet after 5-betting pre. Negreanu decides to take a small stab at the pot, which is reasonable, since he has the range advantage on the JT6-board. He probably puts Phil on a hand like AK or AQ.
On the turn, Hellmuth picks up a flush draw and decides to lead with a $42,000 bet. Great play by Phil as this is a really good turn card for him and even if he gets called he most likely still has outs to the flush.
Daniel makes an understandable fold as he can’t really call with Pocket Deuces here.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
The wildest hand you ever going to see from Phil Hellmuth for sure. When analysing the hand it does show however how good the instincts of Phil Hellmuth are.
He seems to know, where he stands in the hand and once you do so, it is easy to make great decisions.
Maybe his excellent instincts and intuition on the poker table is what the Poker Brat refers to as “White Magic”.
