In our Poker Hand of the Week we analyse the most reckless bluff of the 2021 WSOP Main Event, if not in WSOP history by Nick Rigby with 32o against the Pocket Kings of Ronald Jensen!
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
We are on Day 6 of the 2021 WSOP Main Event and the remaining players are already deep in the money, which means pay jumps and ICM slowly but surely begin to matter.
We are at the 9-handed featured table and Nick Rigby has Ronald Jensen easily covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
At Blinds of 60K/120K with a 120K Big Blind Ante, Ronald Jensen raises to 325,000 with K♠K♦ from the small blind and Nick Rigby 3-bets to 920,000 from the big blind with 3♥2♦.
Jensen now comes back over the top with a 4-bet to 2,100,000 and Nick Rigby thinks for a couple of seconds before making the call. And just like that there are 4,310,000 in the pot.
Flop:
The flop comes A♠4♠4♦, which is not what you want to see when you hold Pocket Kings. Ronald therefore checks over to Nick, who snap-shoves All-In.
Jensen goes deep into the tank for 80 seconds, before ultimately folding his hand. Just to get shown the stone-cold bluff by Rigby, who wins a huge 7,320,000 pot with Three-High like a boss.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
What a sick bluff! Let’s take an in-depth look into this spectacular hand to get an idea, why Nick Rigby went nuts here.
Preflop Ronald Jensen has an easy raise from the small blind with Pocket Kings and Nick Rigby usually an easy fold with 32o. However, Rigby has other ideas and he makes an almost 3x 3-bet. This bet obviously aims to end the hand right here.
Not going to work though and a dream spot for Jensen, who holds Pocket Kings in a blind versus blind situation against a loose-aggressive amateur player. So Ronald correctly 4-bets and at the latest now you would expect Rigby to fold but he flats and sticks around.
An Ace-high flop is exactly what you don’t want to see in a 4-bet pot, when holding Pocket Kings and Jensen checks. Nick instantly puts him All-In and into a tough spot.
Ronald’s problem is that Nick’s preflop flatting range in this spot, where his opponent has less than pot size behind consists of mainly strong Aces, so facing an insta-shove on the flop, this is a fold against a reasonable player.
However, Rigby has been making some crazy moves before on the feature table and given the fact that Jensen invested more than 42% of his stack preflop, you could also argue that he is pot-committed, which would mean he has to call it off.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
One of the most reckless bluffs in the history of the WSOP Main Event, where Three-high get Pocket Kings to fold!
However, as so often in poker a mistake by Ronald Jensen gave way and led to the success of this insane play. Jensen had only 40 big blinds at the start of the hand. When you get 3-bet blind versus blind this is a slam dunk All-In pre.
Even if, you decide you want to get more money into the pot from a loose-aggressive player or fish and you invest more than 42% of your stack for a preflop 4-bet, then you are committed and have to make the crying call on the flop.
Especially given the fact that Nick Rigby had been making several questionable moves and showing bluffs before, he is capable of bluffing here and if this is the case then you have one more reason to call it off in this spot.
This very reckless bluff by Nick Rigby, but bad play and fold by his opponent.
