Poker Hand of the Week Setup

Our Poker Hand of the Week comes from the $5/$10 No Limit Hold’em cash game, which took place on LiveattheBike on February 6, 2020 and features people’s favorite Mamacita.

Poker Hand of the Week - Mamacita Sets a Trap

The lineup consists mainly of Live at the Bike mid stakes regs, which often play together on LATB and therfore have a lot of history.

A very important backgorund information is that this is the last hand of the session/live stream and many people tend to play more lose and try to make a move before everybody racks up his cheaps and heads home.

Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop Action:

There is a straddle to $20 and 2 people limp, before Mamacita bumps it up from the highjack with Q♠Q♥ to $120. Instead of thinning the field with a 6 x raise, she gets five callers. as this is the last hand of the session and everybody wants to be a part of it. Pot Size: $645

Flop:

The flop 6♣Q♦T♦ is very spicy as it hits all five players at least to a certain extend. It checks around to Mamacita, who has flopped the nuts.

She bets relatively small with 35% pot and gets two callers with Gil the Plumber, who has 63 for bottom pair and @MrFabosh with K♣9♣ for the gutshot to the nuts and an overcard.. Pot size: $1,470

Turn:

The 7♥ on the turn makes @MrFabosh a double gutter, but it checks again around to Mamcita, who now bets $800 into $1,470.

While Fabosh folds a pretty strong hand, Gil decides to stick aorund with his mere bottom pair no kicker. Pot Size: $3,070

River:

On the river T♥ the board pairs making Mamacita Top Full House. However, it is Gil the Plumber, who gets the idea to turn his hand into a bluff and represents a big hand by donk shoving All-in for $1,775.

After giving him a nasty small slowroll. Mamacita tosses in the call and takes down a nice $6,620 pot.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

As so often in live poker, we see are seeing things getting completely out of line in the last hand of the night. For some reason, many poker players think they have to play the last hand and this often results in big pots or reckless bluffs.

Let’s go through the hand street by street. Preflop Mamacita decides to go for a very large 6 x raise with Pocket Queens after 4 players limped in front of her to thin the field as her hand is pretty vulnerable in a multiway pot.

On the flop all 5 players pick up some equity, but while Patrick elects to fold bottom pair and Kask Money even lays down a flush draw, Gil the Plumber decided to stick around with a weaker bottom pair and @MrFabosh with a gutshot and overcard. The reason for that is probably that Mamacita lured them in with a very small bet of only 35% pot regarding that she has the absolute nuts.

The turn makes Fabosh a double gutshot together with the overcard significantly increases his equity, but he now folds against another bet from Mamacita. The question is: Why does he call on the flop, if he folds on the turn after picking up equity? Gil the Plumber only has bottom pair and no kicker and this is an easy fold in a 5-way pot. Gil however seems to have other plans and check-calls again.

On the river Gil decides to turn his hand into a bluff by moving All-In. However, there are three reasons, why this is a bad idea: Gil has only a little bit more than half pot behind ($1,775 into $3,070) giving his opponents almost 3 to 1, which means he won’t get a strong two pair or better to fold.

Secondly, the pair on the river didn’t change the board structure and no draws came in, excpet for the full house, giving this bluff and even lower chance to succeed.

And thirdly Mamacita showed a lot of strength by betting twice into 4 players on the flop and 2 players on the turn, so it is very likely that she has top pair or better, which she probably won’t fold for this cheap prize Gil is giving her.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

It were Mamacita’s genius small bets of only 35% on the flop and a little bit more than half pot on the turn with top set that tricked Gil into believing that she is weak, while holding the absolute top of her range.

This is exactely what Mamacita wanted to induce a bluff by one of her opponents and Gil the Plumber walked right into it. Well done Mamacita!
