Poker Hand of the Week Setup
Oops he did It again! In our Poker Hand of the Week James Bord shoves All-In in a $28,550 with 72o against Scott Ball on Poker After Dark.
This spectacular hand comes from the latest Poker After Dark episode “Not About Nick”, which features Nick Schulman, Matt Berkey, Terry Fleischer, James Bord, Scott Ball, and Jeremiah Williams.
Scott Ball and James Bord are often guests in televised cash games, such as High Stakes Poker Season 8, and therefore know each other’s game pretty well.
They are playing $50/$100 No-Limit Hold’em with a $100 big blind ante and Scott Ball has James Bord covered. Important to note: The 7-2 Game is on!
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
James Bord raises from the hijack to $300 with 7♣2♠ and Scott Ball 3-bets from the button to $1,200 holding Q♣J♥.
Instead of folding, Bord comes back over the top with a large 4-bet to $5,000, but Ball calls and just like that there are $10,250 in the pot before the flop is even dealt.
Flop:
The flop comes 2♥9♥4♦ and James Bord insta-shoves All-In for $18,300, which is approximately 1.8x pot size.
Ball has completely whiffed and folds. James Bord turns over 72o and collects a nice $28,550 pot plus the additional bounty from his opponents accompanied by heavy laughter at the table.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s take an in-depth look at this sick hand. Bord’s original intention of the preflop raise with 72o from late position is to steal the blinds and win the additional bounty.
Scott Ball upsets his plan though by making a big 3-bet of 4x and this is where it gets interesting as James plays back at him with a very large 4.17x 4-bet. QJo is a fold here, but Scott knows that Bord is very capable of making a play here and decides to see a flop in position.
The flop brings not only three low cards, but also a pair for James Bord and he insta-shoves for almost double pot size.
This is a great and the correct play for two reasons: James is clearly representing a big pair such as JJ-AA with his 4-bet pre, which he needs to protect on the flop, so his story checks out. In addition to that, once he flops a pair he has to go with his hand as he has already invested a chunk.
Instead of a cbet, James announces All-in, which looks much stronger and provides significantly more fold equity.
Great bluff by James Bord, who convincingly tells the story of an overpair, although he is holding the worst starting hand in Texas Hold’em.
