Jake Daniels and Trevor Pope have been battling at Poker After Dak all “Gamblers Delight”week long with Jake getting the best of Trevor over and over again. In our Poker Hand of the Week he extracts maximum value with top set against Pope’s bottom pair no kicker simply by playing his opponent’s tendencies.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
The last Poker After Dark week was called “Gamblers Delight”. Reason for it was that the line-up consisted of action players, who like to gamble such as Jake Daniels, Trevor Pope, James Bord, Dan Shak, Lynne Ji, Albert Destrade and Bryan Ercolano.
They are playing 6-max NL $100/$200 with a mandatory $400 straddle. Jake and Trevor have been battling all week with Daniels outplaying him in all the big pots.
Both players have about even stacks at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
It folds around to Trevor Pope in the Hi-Jack, who raises to $500 with 5♦2♦.
Jake Daniels picks up K♥K♣ right behind him and makes it $2,600 to go- Trevor calls and everybody else folds. Pot Size: $5,700
Flop:
Heads-Up to a flop of K♠4♥2♣, which gives Jake top set, while Trevor flops bottom pair.
Pope checks and Daniels choses a tiny cbet sizing of 21% and Trevor check-calls. Pot Size: $8,100
Turn:
The 8♦ on the turn doesn’t changes much except for that Trevor is drawing dead.
Jake now sizes up by betting $6,100 into $8,100 and Pope check-calls again. Pot Size: $20,300
River:
10♣ on the river and Jake goes for a small value bet of one quarter pot. Trevor quickly calls and Jake Daniels wins another big $30,700 pot from him.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
As always we analyse the Poker Hand of the Week step by step, before jumping to any conclusions.
Trevor’s preflop raise from the Highjack with 52s is very loose, especially since with Jake Daniels a very tricky player, who outplayed him numerous times, sits right behind him.
Jake’s 3-bet with Pocket Kings is standard, while Trevor’s subsequent call is pretty bad. If you go for a steal from late position and get 3-bet, while being out of position against a strong player, you should just fold and move on.
The flop is an absolute dream for Jake as he flops the Nuts. Now Pope can’t fold to the small cbet, since he has to continue with his bottom pair.
After a blank on the turn, Jake fires a sizeable second barrel. Trevor has a clear fold, but he again decides to stick around instead.
After another blank on the river, Daniels makes a beautiful value bet of one quarter pot and Pope calls relatively quickly, although he can only beat a stone cold bluff.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
This hand is a perfect example, how to maximize value when flopping a set by playing your opponent’s tendencies.
Jake Daniels is well-aware that Trevor is very sticky, calling way too much and hates to be bluffed, which he uses brilliantly to his advantage.
With a small continuation bet on the flop he keeps him in the pot. Following by a large second barrel and a small value bet to make it look bluffy.
His plan works to perfection as Trevor completely falls for it and loses a large $30,700 pot with bottom pair no kicker.
