Poker Hand of the Week – Limitless folds the Nut Straight to Fedor’s river shove

Poker Hand of the Week Setup

In session 4 of the Face-Off Challenge Limitless folded the nut straight to a river shove by Fedor Holz. Let’s take an in-depth look at this controversial hand.

Limitless vs. Fedor Holz Face Off Heads-Up Challenge kicks off tomorrow at 8 pm CET

This hand is from the last session of the Face-Off Challenge between Wiktor “Limitless” Malinowski and Fedor Holz.

The two opponents have played a lot of hands against each other and therefore have a pretty good idea of the other’s game.

They are playing NL$100/$200 Heads-Up and Limitless is up 65K for the session at this point and has Fedor covered.

Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

Fedor raises from the button with J♥8♣ to $500 and Wiktor flats from the big blind with Q♥J♠. Pot Size: $1,000

Flop:

The flop of 10♣ A♥7♣ is very interesting as both players pick up straight draws and gutshots and backdoor draws are much more important in heads-up than on a 6-max or Full Ring table.

Wiktor checks, Fedor makes a continuation bet of $600 and Limitless calls. Pot Size: $2,200

Turn:

On the K♠ turn Limitless binks the gutshot and now has a very well-disguised straight. Malinowski checks for a second time and Fedor does fire a second barrel of $2,200. Wiktor just calls again. Pot Size: $6,600

River:

The K♣ on the river is a bit of a scare card for Wiktor as it pairs the board and also the flush draw comes in.

He therefore checks. Holz can only win by betting and bet big is what he does by going for the overbet shove of $7,836 into $6,600.

“Oh my god, eijeiejei” Wiktor shouts and after 20 seconds he mucks his hand, just to get shown the stone-cold bluff by Fedor as insult to injury and Holz wins a nice $14,436  pot with just jack-high.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

Very questionable fold by Limitless at first glance, but let’s take an in-depth look at this hand to see, if it really was a bad decision.

Preflop, I would have liked a 3-bet with QJ better from the big blind to take over the initiative, but calling is ok too.

The flop is absolutely standard. Really interesting this hand gets from the turn on. Fedor fires a second barrel after being checked to. Limitless can check-raise here, but he has the very well-disguised nuts and doesn’t want to lose his customer here in case Fedor is bluffing, which is the case.

The river is not the card Wiktor wanted to see as you can tell from his reaction. The obvious flush draw comes in and in addition to that the board paired turning two pair or set combinations into a full house. All those hands are in Fedor’s second barrel range.

I therefore gave Fedor a range to get an idea, how Wiktor’s hand plays against that:

As you can see, Wiktor’s odds of winning the hand against Fedor’s range are 69.14% making this indeed a clear call, despite the not so favourable pot odds offered by Fedor’s overbet.

In contrast, Holz played the hand very well and showed balls to go for the gutsy Triple Barrel Bluff, which was his only way to win.
