The current Poker After Dark week is called “Feeding Franzi” and it is a high stakes NL$100/$200 cash game. In our Poker Hand of the Week, we are analysing the great fold of Eli Elezra on the river with Trip Aces from the latest episode!
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
The running Poker After Dark week is called “Feeding Franzi” and it features Maria Ho, Zach Franzi, Nick Wright, Joelle Parenteau, Hish Salama, Daniel Weinand and Eli Elezra.
They are playing 7-max $50/$100 No-Limit Hold’em with mandatory straddle, so actually NL$100/$200
Eli Elezra has Daniel Weinand easily covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Maria Ho straddles to $200. Daniel Weinand picks up 8♦8♣ in the small blind and makes it $700 to go. Eli Elezra calls from the big blind holding A♣3♦ and Maria defends her straddle with 6♦2♦. Pot Size: $2,200
Flop:
3-way to a flop of 8♠5♣A♥. It’s an absolute dream flop for the preflop raiser Daniel Weinand as he flops a set, while Eli Elezra makes top pair.
Weinand chooses a small cbet sizing of 36%, which induces a raise to $1,700 from Elezra. Maria Ho folds and Daniel just calls, when the action comes back to him. Pot Size: $5,600
Turn:
The 9♥ on the turn does complete 76 for an open-ended straight draw. Weinand now checks to set the trap, but Eli doesn’t falls for it and checks behind. Pot Size: $5,600
River:
The A♦ on the river is a potential troublesome card, especially since the turn went check-check. Daniel Weinand has to bet now and goes big with almost a pot size bet of $5,000 into $5,600.
Eli Elezra goes deep into the tank for well over a minute and ultimately open-folds Trip Aces and loses the minimum. Daniel Weinand rakes in the $10,650 Pot, but knows that he missed out on a lot of value.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s analyse this spectacular fold step by step. Daniel’s preflop raise from the small blind with Pocket Eights is absolute standard, as is Eli’s call with an Ace from a big blind and Maria’s straddle defend with two suited cards.
I like the small cbet sizing by Weinand on the flop as it not only keeps mediocre hands in the pot, but also induces bluffs. This is exactly what happens here. In addition, I don’t dislike Eli’s small info/probe raise either, which is only slightly more than a min-raise and gives him the info, if his opponent has his Ace-Rag beat.
On the turn Weinand sets the trap by checking to set up a check-raise, which is reasonable with a set. The only problem is that you are risking that your opponent checks behind and that you can build the pot. Eli Elezra is making a very good check behind for pot control and we go to the river.
The river is an Ace, which can be a very troublesome card for Elezra as he now has Trip Aces. Daniel can’t check anymore and wants to get some value for his set, so he loses against most other Aces such as A5 and A8 -AK.
In addition, he can’t beat sets and the obvious straight draw with 76 also got there, which means there are simply too many hands he is losing too and a call is not profitable here in the long-term.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
A really good fold by Eli Elezra, who puts the pieces of the puzzle correctly together and as reward manages to lose the minimum.
This would not have happened tough, would Daniel Weinand have chosen another line and bet the turn.
One of the poker principles states:
“Big bets are for big hands” or “Have a Big Hand, Build a Big Pot”.
And there is a lot of truth as it is generally advisable to go for maximum and three streets of value with your set, since simply risking too much value by checking.
