Poker Hand of the Week Setup
WSOP Online grinder Daniel Negreanu plays almost every tournament and managed another deep run in Event #24: $400 No-Limit Hold’em 8-Handed, where he had to deal with a massive cooler. Daniel Negreanu turns Top Two Pair and runs into a flopped set of his opponent “www”. Can he escape or does Daniel go broke?
It’s almost halftime at the WSOP 2020 and Daniel Negreanu had great results so far by cashing in 15 of the 26 WSOP.com events, although he is still hunting his first bracelet.
Our Poker Hand of the Week comes from WSOP Event #24, a $400 No-Limit Hold’em 8-Handed, where Negreanu made another deep run.
We are in the early stages of the tournament with blinds of 50/100. Both players are very deep having effective stack sizes of 243 big blinds.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop Action:
“Dathere” min-raises from the highjack. Daniel Negreanu calls from the small blind at blinds of 400/800 with a 50 Ante Daniel Negreanu finds K♥Q♦ and “www” in the Big Blind comes along with 3♦3♠. Pot size: 600
Flop:
They go 3-way to the flop of Q♠7♥3♣. Daniel and “www” check to the preflop raiser, who bets half pot with 300 into 600. Negreanu check-calls and when the action comes back to “www” he check-raises to 1,000 with bottom set.
“Dathere” folds, but Daniel decides to see a flop with Top Pair good kicker. Pot Size: 2,900
Turn:
The turn K♣ is a very interesting and for Negreanu extremely nasty card as he makes Top Two and beats all other two pair combinations “www” could have check-raised with on the flop.
However, Daniel checks over to “www” again, who now bets 1,975 into 2,900. As both players are really deep, DNegs has three options here: Call, check-raise or shove. Kid Poker decides to proceed cautiously and just calls. Pot Size: 6,850
River:
The 7♣ on the river pairs the board and brings in the backdoor flush. It is a very interesting card as it actually improves the hand of both players.
Negreanu checks a third time and “www” now bets a little bit less than half pot with 3,025 into 6,850. Daniel calls, sees the bad news and a pot of 12,900 goes to “www”.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
This hand is another example, why Daniel Negreanu is one of the best, when it comes to small ball poker and controlling the size of the pot.
Most players would have gone broke on the Turn, when they hit Top Two Pair, while Negreanu manages to only lose 19% of his stack in this massive cooler situation.
Daniel’s alarm bells already ring on the flop, when “www” check-raises into two players on a very dry and rainbow board.
The remarkable moment of this hand is however the turn, when Negreanu makes Top Two. With only a gutshot and a backdoor flush being there as possible draws, while a flush draw is extremely unlikely due to www’s check-raise on the flop.
www’s hand range can be narrowed down to Two Pair or more likely Sets after check-raising the flop, with 65 for the gutshot being the only realistic bluff in his range.
That’s the reason why Daniel doesn’t go overboard and elects to just call with Top Two on the turn as “www” can easily have a set here.
When the board pairs on the river, significantly improves the strength of Negreanu’s hand as it cuts the combos of Pocket Sevens “www” can have down to only one combination.
It is therefore highly unlikely that he has Pocket Sevens and his value range can be narrowed down further to Q-7 and Pocket Threes. That means, Daniel can only really beat a bluff with 6-5 for the gutshot straight draw, which is why he only calls.
Well played by both players and very impressive by Kid Poker to not go broke, when turning Top Two Pair on a rainbow board.
