It’s a world turned upside down in High Stakes Poker Season 9 bas the biggest High Stakes Poker winner of all time is so far the biggest loser. As if this would not be enough, Tom Dwan got busted a second time by Daniel Negreanu losing a massive $272,600 Pot, which we will analyse in our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
Our Poker Hand of the Week comes from the third episode of the brand-new High Stakes Poker Season which features poker superstars Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan, JRB, Patrik Antonius, Doyle Brunson among others.
DNegs already won a huge pot vs. Tom Dwan and has “durrrr” therefore easily covered at the start of our Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
5♥K♦6♠6♣
Preflop:
Patrik Antonius makes a loose raise from Under The Gun with 10♠8♠ to $2,000 and Daniel Negreanu sets a trap by just calling with K♠K♥ right behind him.
Tom Dwan walks right into it by making a big squeeze play to $14,000 with A♣J♠. Patrik folds and Daniel 4-bets to $32,000, Dwan calls. Pot Size: $68,600.
Flop:
The flop brings 10♣4♥J♦ giving Tom Dwan Top Pair Top Kicker. After DNegs makes a very small continuation bet of only 29% pot, Dwan is in a very tough spot as he has only a little bit more than pot behind, making it very difficult to get away from Top Top.
“durrrr” shoves, gets snap-called by Daniel and we have the biggest pot of High Stakes Poker Season 9 so far worth a staggering $272,600.
Daniel Negreanu is a huge 4 to 1 favourite and they decide to run it twice:
First Runout:
The first board brings 10♣4♥J♦Q♠, so now Tom Dwan needs a King or a Jack, but the 7♠ secures Daniel Negreanu half of the pot.
Second Runout:
The second runout brings another Q♥ on the turn and once again Dwan needs to hit one the four outs. The 4♣ isn’t one of them and Daniel Negreanu downs Tom Dwan again to scoop a massive $272,600 pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s go through this hand step by step.
Patrik Antonius serves as driver of the action with a loose UTG raise holding 108s. DNegs now sets a nice and intelligent trap by just calling with Pocket Kings, since he knows that the two most aggressive players, who like to make big squeezes, are still to act behind him.
This is exactly what happens, when Tom Dwan makes a large 7x squeeze from the big blind. Now, Negreanu has a nice 4-bet spot and that’s what he does.
Alarm bells should be going on in Dwan’s head, since this line is almost always a hand such as Kings or Aces, that’s why you should be folding here out of position, Dwan decides to see a flop though.
And the Jack-high flop spells disaster as now it will be almost impossible to get away from Top Pair Top Kicker. Daniel makes a small cbet to induce and Tom can’t get away.
Just like that there is $273K in the middle and Tom Dwan is a 4 to 1 underdog. He loses both runouts and is felted again by Daniel Negreanu.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
A nice, little preflop trap works out to perfection for Daniel Negreanu. By only calling preflop after a raise with Pocket Kings, he pushes Tom Dwan into making a big squeeze.
This squeeze opens the door for a 4-bet and especially to play for stacks on the flop as Tom Dwan has only potsize behind.
Once Dwan flops Top Pair Top Kicker, there is no escaping this and Daniel gets his money into the middle as a massive 4 to 1 favourite.
Nice play by DNegs!
