Setup Poker Hand of the Week
Clash of the Titans in our Poker Hand of the Week, where Daniel Negreanu runs a massive bluff on Twitch Poker Legend Jason Somerville by perfectly playing his image in WSOP 2020 Event #19, a $400 No-Limit Hold’em.
The WSOP Online is in full-effect and two of the players that play almost every event are Daniel Negreanu and Twitch Poker King Jason “JCarver” Somerville, who plays under the nickname “haderade” on WSOP.com.
We are in the early stages of WSOP 2020 Event #16, a $400 No-Limit Hold’em with 2 x Re-Entries.
The effective stack sizes are 54 big blinds. Both players have a lot of history and Daniel has position on Jason.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop Action:
At blinds of 400/800 with a 50 Ante Daniel Negreanu finds A♥K♥ UTG+1 and makes a min-raise to 800.
Jason Somerville, whose hand is unknown, decides to defend his big blind. Pot size: 2,250
Flop:
The flop 6♣7♣7♠ certainly favors the big blind defending range, but as the board is paired, there is a decent change that Ace-high is still good and DNegs therefore goes for a small continuation bet of 650, which is a little bit les than 1/3 pot.
Jason Somerville aka “haderade” calls and we see a turn card. Pot Size: 3,550
Turn:
The 8♦ is another great card for Jason’s big blind range and also completes some straight draws. Somerville now leads 1,100 into 3,550 and although this is a pretty bad card for Negreanu and he only has Ace-high, he decides to stick around. Pot Size: 5,750
River:
On the river 5♣ basically everything gets there. Jason bets very small again with 1,500 into 5,750, which is slightly more than quarter pot.
Daniel Negreanu now makes a large 5 x raise to get him of his hand and after a few seconds Jason Somerville sends his cards into the muck and Daniel collects a nice 14,700 pot with just Ace-high!
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
This hand is a perfect example, why it is very important to be aware how your opponents perceive you at the poker table and how to use your image to your benefit.
Daniel is very aware that Jason perceives him as a tight player and decides to outplay him. That’s the only reason, why Negreanu floats the turn and then raises Jason’s bet on the river.
Another reason, why Negreanu probably raised on the river was the Somerville’s sizing. On the river every imaginable draw gets there and a full house is possible as well.
If Jason really would hold a very strong hand such as a full house, would he then really bet just quarter pot? Probably not.Daniel knows that and doesn’t buys his story.
The reason for the raise on the river, which decides the hand is therefore a combination of perfectly playing your image and abusing a sizing tell of your opponent. Well played DNegs!
