Setup Poker Hand of the Week
Old vs. young in our Poker Hand of the Week, where Daniel Negreanu owns Finnish online crusher Samuel “€urop€an” Vousden in WSOP Event #58: $5,000 No Limit Hold’em 6-Handed Championship.
We are at the end of late registration WSOP 2020 Event #58, $5,000 No Limit Hold’em 6-Handed Championship, which is a tournament with a star-studded field due to the large buy-in.
So it doesn’t come as a surprise that Daniel is at a very tough table including online legends Chris “Big Huni” Hunichen and Samuel Vousden aka €urop€an, who is also Negreanu’s opponent in this very interesting hand.
Effective stack sizes at the start of the hand are 35.2 big blinds and Daniel has €urop€an well covered.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop Action:
Daniel min-raises from the cut-off with K♠T♦ and €urop€an decides to defend his big blind very wide with 5♥3♦ Pot size: 5.3 Big Blinds
Flop:
The flop K♣4♠4♥ is very decent for DNegs as he flops two pair with good kicker. After being checked to, Daniel makes a small cbet of 1.3 bb into 5.3 bb.
Now €urop€an check-raises and makes it 3.8 big blinds to go, but Negreanu goes nowhere and calls. Pot Size: 12.9 Big Blinds
Turn:
The K♥ on the turn is a gin card for Daniel as it makes him top full house. €urop€an checks again and Negreanu sets the trap by checking back. Pot Size: 12.9 Big Blinds
River:
The river 9♦ doesn’t changes anything and now €urop€an decides to go for it by making a pot size bet of 12.9 bb with only 16.5 bb behind.
Negreanu could raise here, but goes for the easy call and screams out “Uh Baby”, when €urop€an shows Five high.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
A nice trap by Daniel Negreanu and €urop€an walks right into it. This hand shows, why there are spots, where it makes sense to check back the turn in order to maximize your profit.
Let’s go through the hand step by step. Daniel’s preflop raise with K-T is standard and although it is very important to defend your big blind pretty wide in MTTs, I would have folded the 5-3o here as this hand simply is too weak.
€urop€an’s defend out of position with a hand this weak puts him into a tough spot and leads to chain reaction of mistakes. On the flop he stakes a stab at it, which is absolutely fine as is the check on the turn.
Negreanu’s check back with top full house on the turn is a really nice play as he figures that he won’t get two streets of value and at the same time he gives €urop€an the chance to bluff the river in case he does have air.
This is exactly the case here and Samuel Vousden now has to decide, if he wants to go for it and steal the pot by bluffing or if he gives up. Vousden decides to go for a big bluff by betting pot size.
Of course, Daniel is never folding here as only Pocket Fours and K-9 beats him. That’s also the reason, why he only calls, although he could have raised here given the strength of his hand.
To conclude, Daniel got the maximum here by making a tricky check on the turn and getting €urop€an to fire a pot size bet with only Five high on the river.
