In our Poker Hand of the Week we explain why Brandon Steven misplayed his hand in a huge $303,900 Pot vs. JRB on High Stakes Poker.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
This hand was played in High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 11, which featured JRB, Bobo Chann, Jennifer Tilly, Rob Yong and Brandon Steven among others.
They are playing 7-max $200/$400 No-Limit Hold’em with a mandatory straddle and JRB got Brandon Steven slightly covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Rob Yong open-raises from the cut-off with A♠Q♣ to $1,000. Brandon with 6♦2♦, Bobo with 8♣6♠, and Rick with 7♥5♥ all call.
JRB then makes a loose and large squeeze to $11,000 from the big blind with 9♠2♠, but Yong and Salomon call. Pot Size: $56,100
Flop:
4-handed to an action flop of 2♥9♦K♦. Both JRB with a disguided bottom Two Pair and Brandon Steven with a pair and flush draw hit the flop hard, while Rob and Rick whiff.
The latter checks, Bellande overbets the pot with $50,000 and Brandon just calls with only $158K behind. Pot Size: $145,500
Turn:
The 3♠ on the turn is an absolute blank and JRB consequently announces All-In. Brandon now has a tough decision, since he only has 158K behind and there are already $303K in the pot.
However, he can’t really call with bottom pair and a flush draw and after thinking it through he folds, while Jean-Robert Bellande wins a large $303,900 Pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Interesting hand. Let’s go through it step by step.
Rob’s preflop raise with AsQc is obviously standard and once Brandon calls, Chann and Salomon get very good pot odds and decide to call.
JRB knows this and tries to steal the pot with his very marginal hand 9s2s and a large 11x squeeze as there is already a lot of dead money in the pot.
However, Robs hand is too strong to fold and his call draws in Brandon and Rick with their Suited Gappers.
The flop of 2h9dKd is an absolute dream scenario for JRB as he flops a very well-disguised Two Pair, while Brandon also flopped well with bottom pair plus flush draw.
Salomon checks and Bellande now makes a nice $50,000 overbet, which I like, as he needs to protect his vulnerable hand.
Rob and Rick get out of the way, but Steven has a pretty easy All-In here as you can’t ask for a better flop with 6d2d and he doesn’t have much money behind. Nevertheless, Brandon just calls leaving himself only a potsize bet behind.
The 3s on the turn is a blank and JRB puts Steven All-in straight away. Now Brandon is in a fine mess as he already has invested a lot of money in the pot, but doesn’t get the right odds to call.
Once he realizes that he has to fold and surrender a big pot and hand without being able to see the river.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
Clear misplay by Brandon Steven! If you play 62s in a multiway pot and flop a pair and flush draw with only 2x pot behind, then this is an easy shove.
By just calling, you take the risk of having to fold your big hand, while not being able to realize your equity, while you already invested a lot of money.
Last but not least, you can get a lot of stronger hands to fold and realize your fold equity to the max, so an All-in would have been the right play in this spot.
