In our Poker Hand of the Week we analyze the largest pot from the new High Stakes Poker episode, where Jennifer Tilly traps Matt Berkey in a $206,700 Pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
This very interesting poker hand was played in High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 13, which featured Nik Airball, Matt Berkey Doug Polk and Jennifer Tilly among others.
They are playing 7-max $200/$400 No-Limit Hold’em and Berkey has Tilly easily covered at the start of the hand.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Lynne Ji raises from UT’G+1 to $1,000 with A♠Q♣. Jennifer then just calls behind her with K♥K♦ and Matt Berkey in the big blind decides to see a flop with J♣3♣. Pot Size: $3,700
Flop:
3-handed to an interesting flop of 5♣2♠4♥ giving Berkey an open-ended straight and backdoor flush draw, while Jen has an overpair.
Jen bets $2,000, Lynne folds, but Berkey check-raises to $6,000. Tilly then 4-bets to $17,000 and Matt calls. Pot Size: $37,700
Turn:
The K♣ on the turn is an absolute action card as Berkey adds a flush draw to go along his OESD and Jennifer now has Top Set.
Matt checks and Jennifer with a sneaky check behind. Pot Size: $37,700
River:
The 4♣ on the river is the money card for Tilly making her a Full House, while Berkey hits the flush.
Matt then makes a $30,000 value bet, just to get raised All-In for $54,500 more by Tilly.
Berkey realises quickly he gets too good odds to fold and flicks in the crying call, just to see that he got trapped all the way, while Jennifer Tilly collects a huge $206,700 pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Very interesting hand and play by Jennifer Tilly. Let’s see what happened here.
Preflop Jen sets the trap by just calling the raise with Pocket Kings, potentially to induce a squeeze from the aggressive opponents behind her.
Berkey is in the big blind and given the great pot odds, he decides to see a flop with Jc3c.
Once Matt picks up an OESD on the flop, this street plays itself. Jen bets $2,000 and Berkey check-calls.
The Kc on the turn is the most interesting card in the deck as Matt picks up a decent amount of equity by adding a flush draw, while Tilly turns Top Set.
When checked to, Jennifer surprisingly checks behind continuing to trap.
It turns out to be the perfect play as Matt Berkey makes the flush on the river and leads for $30K. Jen only has $84,500 behind and announces All-In.
Even though this line looks very strong, Berkey doesn’t have a choice, but to call off as he simply gets too good pot odds.
When you get 3 to 1 you can’t fold a rivered flush.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
So what do we learn from this hand? Well, it is a good example that slow playing can be very profitable against aggressive oponents as Tilly wins the absolute maximum here.
This depends very much on your opponent and his playing style though. Against loose-aggressive opponents slow playing can be a good option.
However, against most other player types it is better to play your big hands fast and straight forward as it will make you more money in the long run.
