Phil Galfond has wrote on his Twitter he believes that the reason for the tremendous Game of Gold success is that it shows the personalities of the poker players and make you root for them.
This is why Game of Gold has been received so well (and perhaps even OVERhyped by those of us who’ve been in poker a while).
Until now, we’d failed to let audiences truly get to know poker players and build a connection.
We’re excited about it and what it could mean for poker. https://t.co/ZcS6aSr9wV

Phil Galfond’s reason for loving the show is how we get to see the players’ real personalities and not just their table demeanour.

One poster, calling himself a casual watcher of poker, said he naturally gravitates towards shows from the boom years, which seems natural enough.
Galfond says that’s normal considering we haven’t had the chance to get to know players the same since.
Makes total sense. People got to know those players ~20 years ago and haven’t gotten to know players since.

Fedor Holz, one of Game of Gold’s participants, wrote about how hard he pushed himself during filming. He said he had no expectations and just wanted to do his best.
That said, he did admit he was concerned that his passion would not come across properly.
He added:
“The majority of my poker career I’ve been focused on trying to compete as fiercely as possible on the highest of levels.
“I dedicated thousands of hours to show no weakness and go as hard as I can after my opponents. The result is what you see when you watch footage of me play live poker.
“No movement. Little speaking. Intensively observing any and every move. Trying to solve the puzzle in front of me. To win.”
Getting a lot of comments about me being upset at my teammate in @GGPoker #GameofGold folding the best hand vs @JoshuaArieh multiple times then blasting off 75bb with A4s.
And I’d just like to say from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to take this chance to apologize…
… TO…

Of course, if there’s going to be any falling out over the show, it will be about how the poker was played.
David Williams was involved in a spat with his teammate Andy Stacks over him folding the best hand multiple times and then firing off his 75bb stack with A4s. That didn’t go down well!
There are already talks about a second season, so let’s see if the Game of Gold success continues.
