Maria Lampropulos has triumphed in the inaugural Women’s Winter Festival Main Event, the series currently underway at London’s Hippodrome Casino.
We are told that this festival aims to celebrate female talent in the poker world in what is a traditionally male-dominated sport.
Inclusivity is another part of the celebration, highlighted by the unique 50/50 event which asks the women on one half of the field to invite a male partner to play on the other half.
As it happens, a man won the £220 NLH ’50/50′ event. Colombia-born Brit Yon Jairo Suaterna was invited to be the teammate of Brit Rosemary Halbach and pulled off the job for a £7,556 prize.
Maria Lampropulos banked £20,000 for her victory after defeating her 270 opponents in the Main Event.
Belgium’s Ann-Roos Callens was defeated by the Argentine heads-up, following Marta Porter to the rail who completed the podium.
The inaugural Women’s Winter Festival sets an important precedent for future events aimed at promoting women’s participation in poker.
As more festivals like this emerge, they are likely to attract even greater numbers of female players, enriching the enriching the game even further.
