Man turns $15 into $3.6 million at a poker table
A man in Perth turned $15 into $3.6 million at the poker table. Of course, this didn’t happen by winning a tournament or playing a cash game – it was a Royal Flush Jackpot that was hit.
The lucky winner was playing a tournament in the Crown Casino Perth in Burswood, Australia when he was dealt a Royal Flush, the best-possible hand in poker.
Unfortunately, the man wished to remain anonymous so there’s no additional information we could share about his identity other than his gender.
What the Non-Poker Media Got Wrong
The mainstream news websites reporting on the event, such as Yahoo News and the Daily Mail, report that the person was playing in “$15 buy-in tournament”.
That would be an oddly low stakes event to put on for casino of Perth Crown’s magnitude. The lowest buy-in tournament on their schedule now is $120. There’s a chance they would run a $15 satellite, but there’s no mention of such events on their official website.
However, the website does give us the answer.
This post they shared on their Facebook page links to a page on their site with more information. It reads:
“Winter has really warmed up at Crown with a local Perth resident walking away with over $3.6 million after striking a Royal Flush on a $15 jackpot bet. Don’t miss your chance to win the entire jackpot amount for the corresponding pool with a Royal flush, or 10% of the jackpot with a Straight flush.”
So it seems players in this Australian casino can voluntarily choose to put $15 in a progressive high hand jackpot that they can claim in full if they hit a Royal Flush at the table. Or, they can get 10% of it with a straight flush.
The unknown man earned a 240,000,000% ROI (return on investment) by choosing to wager that $15.
The odds to make a Royal Flush in Texas Hold’em are 1 in 649,740. This means that, given the size of the Jackpot, he also made the right +EV decision with the bet.
“This is Australia’s biggest ever jackpot won”
This is the largest high hand Jackpot ever won in Australia. The former record was $2.7 million which was taken down in September 2016.
Crown Casino Perth chief operating officer Lonnie Bossi told the West Australian newspaper about the staggeringly large payout:
“To have a record-breaking $3.6 million won at Crown Perth is quite extraordinary. This is Australia’s biggest ever jackpot won on the tables and I am so excited to see that go off here.”
