WSOP to Return in 2021
Kevin “Kevmath” Mathers has declared on Twitter that there will be a live WSOP in 2021. Kevmath is known for being right almost every time when he makes big announcements, so it looks like the poker community finally has something to cheer about.
Spoke with a high-ranking WSOP executive last night
To answer two frequently asked questions*:
A LIVE edition of the WSOP will happen in 2021
The dates of the live WSOP will NOT be during the usual timeframe (late May-mid July)
*Assuming conditions continue improving
— Kevin Mathers (@Kevmath) March 2, 2021
After the chaos of 2020, could live poker be about to return with a bang? If Kevin Mathers is telling the truth, then we might be about to witness the biggest WSOP in History.
The poker community has been locked up for a year, which might be fine for the online grinders, great, in fact, but those who prefer the live scene will be clamouring to get back to the real green felt.
The final line in the tweet should not be left out, though.
“*Assuming conditions continue improving”
As great as the vaccine program looks to be performing right now, there are still many unknowns to be making grand plans for the future.
What Date Is Most Likely for the WSOP 2021?
Kevmath says that he is sure the World Series will not run during the traditional months of late May through mid-July.
He later adds that the usual plan for the organisers is to make an announcement “…4-5 months in advance, then details are filled in as the event gets closer.”
So, it looks likely that they are hedging their bets by aiming for the end of the year. Let’s face it, the weather in Nevada is never going to be a problem so it’s now all about avoiding clashes with other scheduled events.
One poster pointed out that there has been talk of moving the WSOP to the new Caesars Event Centre, which begs the question of could the festival even take place outside of Las Vegas? Possibly even outside of the US?
Why No Official Announcement?
Some people are questioning that if Kevmath has genuine information why has there not been any word from the WSOP organisers.
Kevmath guesses that they are purely waiting on being able to confirm a date, which does actually make sense. Inconveniencing players making plans for international travel will not go down well if dates are needlessly changed.
It’s worth noting that Kevmath does have access to the WSOP inner circle after operating the brand’s social media during the last few years. This is likely to be an above-board announcement, even if it isn’t official.
There is also news that Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak agreed to allow casinos to open at 35% capacity, up from 25% due to the improving situation.
Let’s also hope that we are not arguing over who is the real WSOP champion this year after what happened during December. A Kevmath follower dryly posted “Will there be 2 fake online main events again?”, to which KevMath answered he has no idea about any other planned events.
