Khang Pham has won his first gold bracelet and a career best prize after taking down the $1,000 Seniors NL Championship.
The event attracted an impressive 7,954 entries, creating a monster $6,999,520 prize pool to fight over.
After three long, gruelling days of play, 26 players made their way back to the playing hall with a winner’s prize of $677,326 to focus on.
American Marc Wolpert was in prime position, holding more than 30 percent of the chips in play and Khang Pham close behind in fourth place.
Mark Seif, the final remaining bracelet winner, could do no better than twelfth place a couple of hours after the action resumed.
Final Action
It took only three hours of play before the final table was set after Ken Deng’s nine-eight suited ran head on into Marc Wolpert’s pocket aces, to send him home in tenth place.
Wolpert then went on a hot run to extend his lead even farther. A timely pair over pair all-in confrontation eliminated William Byrnes in ninth.
Shawn Stuart was next to leave, right at the start of a steady elimination of the rest of the challengers until there were only two left.
The heads-up match began with the players wielding stacks of equal size but it was Pham who made his move first.
Pham raised to 2,900,000 with J♥ 6♠and Wolpert called with 8♣ 6♦
The flop came down 2♦ 6♥ 6♣ and Wolpert checked.
Pham put a bet in of 1,400,000 and Wolper calls.
The 3♥ turn changed nothing and Wolpert checked again.
Pham now bets 2,900,000 and his opponent decides it’s time to raise with his trips, making it 8,000,000 to go.
Pham elects to only call.
The river is the 7♠ and Wolpert goes for max value with a bet of 10,000,000. Pham ponders getting all of his chips in but goes for the more circumspect line of flat calling only to see he had the best hand all along.
The tournament ended when Pham’s top pair triumphed over a straight draw which didn’t come in.
Pham paid tribute to his friend and supporter, bracelet winner Arash Ghaneian, who was the man who recommended playing in the event to begin with.
“Without him, I wouldn’t be in this event and I certainly wouldn’t have a gold bracelet around my wrist, his support meant everything.”
