Kayhan Mokri goes back-to-back in EPT €100k Super High Roller

Norway’s Kayhan Mokri landed remarkable back-to-back EPT titles today in Barcelona, taking down the EPT €100k Super High Roller title for the second year in a row for a combined €2.1million.

One of the most expensive live SHR buy-ins on the calendar, the PokerStars’ biggie attracted a total of 41 entries, 28 unique – a massive increase on last year’s 18 entries from 10 players.

The prizepool therefore stood at €3,977,820, with €1,372,420 up top compared to the €750,960 Mokri pocketed last year in his breakout victory at the nosebleed MTT level.

Fresh off a €259,646 scoop of the €20k earlier in the week, Mokri found himself running deep yet again as the players battled for just six paid spots.

That was decided late on Sunday as the money-bubble ended day 2’s drama, with French pro Thomas Santerne all-in and at risk…

Thomas Santerne: A♠ K♥
Sean Winter: 9♠ 9♦

Flop: 10♦ Q♦ 10♠

Turn: 8♥

River: 5♥

Bye-bye to Santerne and bag ‘em up for the remaining six players, safe in the knowledge they had locked up €278,400 each.

A bad day at the races for Antonius and Suvarna

That’s all the Patrik Antonius would make when play resumed today, the flying Finn’s resurrection as one of the elite live MTT players temporarily halted by Jesse Lonis. Antonius shoved his final 8 bigs and we were off to the races…

Patrik Antonius: K♥ J♥
Jesse Lonis: 7♠ 7♦

Flop: Q♣ 6♣ 6♦

Turn: 9♥

Despite Antonius’ calls for a jack, the river bricked…

River: 8♦

…and the Finnish legend was out in 6th spot, taking home €278,400.

Santhosh Suvarna would soon follow Antonius to the rail, India’s top pro shortstacked and finding the day’s “racing” no easier…

Santhosh Suvarna: A♥ Q♦

Kayhan Mokri: 9♦ 9♣

Flop: 6♣ 3♠ 4♦

Turn: J♥

River: 2♥

No luck for Lonis and Winter

It took a while, but after the break it was Jesse Lonis getting short and his A♠ 2♠ shove after Davies opened was called.

Jesse Lonis: A♠ 2♠
Seth Davies: K♣ Q♠

Flop: K♥ J♥ J♣

Turn: 7♣

River: 5♣

A €457,400 cash for Lonis and a podium spot for the remaining trio.

Three-handed play saw Mokri, Davies and Sean Winter trade blow-for-blow but something had to give, and eventually it was Winter who drew the short straw.

It was three-way to the flop after Winter limped in from the button…

Sean Winter: J♦ 8♥

Seth Davies: 4♠ 2♥

Kayhan Mokri: 10♥ 6♠

Flop: K♠ 9♦ 2♣

It was checked round to the turn…

Turn: Q♠

And was checked to Winter, who tossed in his remaining last 95k, receiving a call from Davies while Mokri folded. Winter had outs but the deck had other ideas…

River: K♣

Third place for Winter and a €616,600 payout, a season-best score for the Florida pro.

Cooler seals the deal for Mokri

Heads-up between Mokri and Davies was worth the best part of €500,000, the chip stacks balanced but not for long. Davies flopped two pair but Mokri turned a set of fives…

…and that meant back-to-back €100k titles for the Norwegian, a remarkable feat.

“No words. Just very lucky I guess,” Mokri told Joe Stapleton in the post-tournament presentation interview, adding: “And some skill in it, I guess. But very fortunate.”

Mokri stated: “I’m playing a game that I love. And once you do something you love, you often get very good at it and are enjoying the moment.

Speaking of the fun aspect, Mokri added: “So, it’s super easy for me… the people I’m playing with are super friendly and great people, it’s super easy to have fun at the same time.”
