Johannes Straver has been crowned champion in the $10,000 WSOP Paradise GGMilion$ Championship, bagging a $807,430 first-place prize.
The Dutchman takes his career live tournament earnings past the $4 million mark, putting him just outside the top 10 for his country.
Speaking after sealing the victory, Straver said:
“It’s quite surreal. You never expect to just keep running through. For me, all the important all ins I just kept turning it and it kept falling my way. Very happy that I ended up winning it.
“It was a big goal. The last couple of years I tried to play more and more live tournaments. To win one is super nice.”
Phil Hellmuth made the final table, still in search of that elusive 18th bracelet to further extend his WSOP record.
Straver noted this and declared his intention to play the highest tournament buy-ins against such company.
He also paid tribute to his friends and supporters, saying that poker is a journey that cannot be done alone.
Action Recap
The field size reached 532 entries for a prize pool of $5,320,000. Only 46 players returned for Day 3 with a schedule to play down to a winner, guaranteeing a long and arduous day.
2019 Main Event champion Hossein Ensan was an early casualty, busting out in 40th place when he needed a flush draw to come in.
Straver made strides in the early going after he won a three-way all-in with pocket queens. The Dutchman then knocked out Stoyan Madanzhiev with ace-queen versus the Bulgarian’s queen-ten.
Marc Rivera, from the Philippines, was the first to leave the final table when a jam with jack-four was called off by Fabian Niederreiter with king-deuce which held.
And it was Hellmuth who came unstuck next when a bluff was snapped off by Jon Vallinas in a three-way pot.
The Spaniard hit his ace for top pair on the river after Fabian Niederreiter folded on the turn and Hellmuth continued firing, even getting into Vallinas’s head by telling him to let him have the pot.
The Poker Brat muttered some profanity on his way to the rail in eighth place.
Vallinas knocked out Rui Neves only minutes later after hitting his nut straight draw on the river.
It was Abdelhakim Zoufri’s turn to face off with Vallinas next with Niederreiter coming along to call the Dutchman’s all-in shove.
Niederreiter folded to a bet and Vallinas’s pocket queens won the day against the ace high of his opponent.
Now it was Arthur Conan’s turn to whittle the field down even more with his ace-nine cracking the pocket kings of Wookuk Lee.
Vallinas was still on a massive heater and he wasn’t finished just yet. It was ace-eight against ace-seven with Conlan and his flopped flush draw but no further help arriving.
As three-handed play kicked off, Straver was the shorty with work to do. In the first few hands he managed to get paid with pocket kings against Vallinas before winning a race against him for a pair of double-ups.
Straver then turned his attention to Niederreiter, doubling again and then finishing the job with a turned straight to take us to heads-up.
The lead for Straver was now more than two-to-one, but it evaporated in no time at all.
Vallinas won a huge pot with a straight and then followed it up by winning almost all of the small pots to retake the lead.
The Spaniard stopped the rot with a nice turn bluff to win a big pot to get back in front.
The final hand went down with Vallinas limping and Straver raising to 4,000,000 with K♥ J♥. Vallinas called with 9♦ 8♠ and we saw a flop of 8♥ 3♥ 2♣.
Straver led out for 3,500,000 and Vallinas jammed his remaining 19,000,000. Straver called.
The turn was the Q♥ followed by the 4♠ giving Straver the title and his first WSOP bracelet.
