Jessie Lonis has defeated Punnat Punsri heads up to claim his maiden Triton Super High Roller title in Event 9: $50K – NLH 7-Handed.
The American high-stakes pro now has $14.5 million in live tournament career earnings, taking him close to the top 100 players of all time.
This result is Lonis’s second biggest of his career, only beaten by his second WSOP bracelet win from last year in the $50,000 Pot Limit Omaha – High Roller.
Running alongside the $200K Triton Invitational event, it was only to be expected that the numbers wouldn’t be as high as hoped but we still saw an impressive 125 entries, including 44 re-entries to build a prize pool of $6,250,000.
Speaking after his win, Lonis said:
“I think I never gave up, which was good. I didn’t quit, or just get it all in, just kept doing my normal thing, stabbing and it worked out. Obviously you never know when you’re going to win, so I just came in and played my best. It was awesome to get my first Triton.”
Action Recap
We saw 28 players returning for Day 2 from the starting field, and only eight of them needed to go to guarantee everyone left a payday.
Punnat Punsri was storming ahead but there were plenty of great players still in.
Luc Greenwood, Ren Lin and Artur Martirosian all failed to spin up a small stack and then Nikita Kuznetcov had the poor luck to be the guy who broke the bubble.
The final table looked as follows:
Player | Big Blinds |
Punnat Punsri | 63 |
Jesse Lonis | 62 |
Dan Smith | 41 |
Daniel Rezaei | 35 |
Leonard Maue | 19 |
Mario Mosbock | 12 |
Alex Kulev | 11 |
Anson Ewe | 7 |
Anson Ewe was the man who looked most likely to bust as play resumed, but it was Alex Kulev who lost out after having his aces cracked with a chance at doubling up his 11 big blinds.
Leonard Maue flopped a straight on a 9♦ 7♦ 8♣ and there was no more to wait for.
Anson Ewe pretty much followed him out of the door after chancing his last three big blinds with 8♠ 7♠ only to run into pocket eights.
Former football professional Mario Mosbock only lasted five more hands after shoving over Punsri’s raise with A♥ 4♥ only to see the Thai star flip over A♦ J♠ and make two pair on the flop.
Daniel Rezaei had been going steadily along but a period of getting cold-decked saw his stack dwindle until he took his shot with A♣ 6♦ which came out second best to Punsri’s pocket eights.
A $446,000 prize took him past the $1 million earnings mark.
Punsri then knocked out Maue two hands later with a standard ace-jack versus ace-king clash where the better hand stayed ahead.
Lonis was the first man to find himself at risk when three-handed play began, but a double paired board counterfeit Punsri’s fours for a timely double-up.
The very next hand, Dan Smith opened and called off Q♠ J♥ after Punsri jammed A♣ 5♠
A jack on the flop looked good but an A♥ river saw Smith heading home with a $675,00 prize for his work.
Punsri now had a lead of three-to-one and a discussion opened about an ICM chop but no deal could be agreed upon.
Lonis was soon the happiest about this after doubling up immediately after to even the stacks.
The next time the chips went in, Lonis had A♣ 9♦ up against Punsri’s A♦ 3♣ and the board ran out favourably to give him a maiden Triton Super High Roller title.
