The underground poker scene in New York City
The underground poker scene in New York City inspirited what is arguably the most famous piece of poker fiction, Rounders.
The 1998 movie starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton became a cult classic among poker players.
The 2017 film Molly’s Game is also about illegal card games. Now, in the age of social media, the same topic is being explored again.
This time, in the form of a short story posted on Reddit in – so far – 6 parts.
The Story of a High School Boy in an New York City Underground Poker Club
The author of the writings claims it’s his actual personal experience. However, you have to take those claims with a grain of salt on Reddit. Many famous viral posts that purported to be authentic turned out to be only made up for “karma”.
The story is about a supposed teenage boy who had made a good amount of money by operating then selling his own web hosting business.
Since he was also an avid poker fan, he decided to wager his money in cash games in an underground poker club in Queens he calls “Fox’s Club”.
He fell in love with the game there and decided he wants to become a dealer – figuring he can make more and more stable money doing that than by playing the game.
As he navigates his way through the shady tables of the NYC underground poker scene, both as a dealer and player, he gets a text from his girlfriend that his father has been sentenced to jail.
And that is where the story is currently at – we need to wait for the next post to find out what’s next.
The Reaction
The users on Reddit Poker seem to love the unfolding story. Most of the comments are about how much they’ve been waiting for the next chapter.
Very few are questioning the authenticity. One commenter points out that the writer used the term “in Long Island” instead “on Long Island” which real New Yorkers tend to say. However, he chalks it up to the fact that the author had claimed to be originally from California.
The writer gets very right some of the fine details about the poker world. For example, how dealers collect rake in live poker clubs or what chip race is.
Also, it is true that new dealers start off by dealing tournaments and need to gain experience before being seated for a cash game, just like the story says.
The fact that the author claims he hosted multi-table poker tournaments in his family home as a teenager may seem outlandish at first.
However, American poker pro Shaun Deeb said in interviews he was doing the same thing – and he’s also from New York state.
