“Second time!” was the celebratory cry as Ukraine’s Igor Yaroshevskyy took down the Triton Poker $60k Turbo event in Monte Carlo last night, his second such title of the year, and with it $862,357.
While the $120k Main Event raged on, nobody was left sitting on the sidelines for long, 48 players (with 13 re-entries) fancying their chances of a shot at a $3,3660,000 prizepool.
Being a Turbo, albeit the most expensive one in the world, it didn’t take too long before the 11 paid spots were in sight. One player got very lucky, another… not so much!
Soyza clashed with Ponakovs and came off worse, but was left with one big blind, the Latvian’s shove presumably aimed at allowing the bubble to continue. That spelled bad news for Artur Martirosian on the other table, his A♥ 10♥ unable to catch Leon Sturm’s pocket 10s.
Martirosian, five cashes and win to his name so far in this series, would have to explain to his bank manager why there was no sixth pot of gold, the remaining 11 players locking up $91,500.
Soyza could run up his single big blind and was joined on the rail by Brian Kim, who opened the Monte Carlo stop with victory in the WPT Global Ultimate Slam, which will become a feature of the Triton Poker SHR Series going forward.
Unlike Sturm, David Yan’s failed to hold up, a 9th spot exit worth $104,000 for the New Zealander, Boivin and Lin soon joining him on the rail.
With six left and the average stack only 16 big blinds, it soon became a push-fold affair, Sturm losing out with J♣ Q♣ to Greenwood’s A♥ K♥ and then Theologis sending Ponakovs to the rail, those pocket 10s again on the side of the ‘hero’. Theologis then added Greenwood to his list of victims to set up three-handed play.
Yaroshevskyy, had the smallest stack by this time but watched on in glee as the other two clashed, Mikolaitis losing out with pocket 8s to Theologis’ J♦ 10♥
Heads-up saw the Ukrainian pro equalise the stacks and that was enough for Theologis to agree to an ICM chop:
- Theologis $860,143
- Yaroshevskyy $833,357
The 10% required to be left over to play for worked out at about $29k (actually 10% of the difference between first and second) and it was Yaroshevskyy who would lift that shortly afterwards.
Theologis jammed with 6♥ 10♥ and Yaroshevskyy called with A♥ 3♦ – by the turn that was a full house for the Ukrainian and his second Triton Poker title.
