Watch the Legends on High Stakes Poker

High Stakes Poker was as good as TV poker ever got. A perfect blend of old and new with legends of the games doing battle with the young guns.

From Doyle Brunson to Tom “durrrr” Dwan we saw them all, and it was great entertainment.

The show ran for seven seasons between 2006 – 2011, until the dark day of Black Friday did its best to ruin poker for American citizens.

The scandal killed off major sponsorship deals from online poker rooms forcing Game Show Network to end the run.

This time around, High Stakes Poker will not be appearing on TV, but will be streamed on the PokerGo app. New episodes are in the pipeline, but the classics from the golden age of poker will also be appearing over the coming months.

Can Gabe Kaplan Return?

One of the reasons for the success of High Stakes Poker was the excellent commentary of Gabe Kaplan. Kaplan made a name for himself as an actor and comedian, but was also known as a member of poker’s elite from 40 years ago.

Initial thoughts are that he won’t return as he has been away from commentating for years, and is also playing a lot of high stakes cash games in Texas.

Norm McDonald was Kaplan’s replacement for the final season, but he has no real background in poker and is a known casino game addict. Not a great example. He lost everything he had three times, including a single loss of $400,000.

One man who was involved in the old days and will be returning to lend a hand is Mori Eskandani. Eskandani was the original producer of High Stakes Poker and is now the executive producer of PokerGo.

Speaking in a press release, he said,

“High Stakes Poker was raw and natural, we just let the players play and that’s what made it so special.”

“It’s truly a dream come true to bring the series to a new generation of poker fans and players, and we expect even more action when the show returns with faces both new and old.”

New and Improved Format

Back in the day, one of the most common criticisms of TV poker was the heavily edited format. As poker players have improved on average immensely, we felt we really needed more context of why hands were played in a certain way.

When PokerCentral took over another classic TV poker show – Poker after Dark – they rebooted it to a live stream format with much longer episodes. Viewers can now really follow the action knowing what is happening with the game flow.

When players make interesting moves, we can start to deduce what they are thinking..

Hopefully, we will have up to date news over the coming weeks about what we can expect. High stakes Poker might well be, once again, the most popular poker show going.
