Phil Hellmuth Pulled Off an insane comeback in High Stakes Duell II Round 1
The date has been set for Round 2 of the High stakes Duel between Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth. Fans should pencil May 5 in their diaries as a day to set aside when the high stakes tournament legends square up once again.
In Round 1 Daniel Negreanu looked as if he was still in good form after his battle against Doug Polk in the High Stakes Feud.
The Canadian raced off into a 19-1 chip lead and looked certain to clinch the win for $100,000, but the Poker Brat had other ideas.
With chips stacks of 97,000 and 3,000 Phil Hellmuth made one of the biggest comebacks in poker history by picking off Negreanu’s bluffs and getting some of his own through.
Hitting a well-timed draw and being lucky enough to hold pocket nines when Negreanu jammed 76s was enough to seal the deal and continue his run of crushing form in this heads-up format.
$200,000 Up for Grab in Round 2
Round Two of the High Stakes Duel II sees an increase in stakes with a $200,000 prize for the winner.
As per the rules, only Daniel Negreanu has to buy in for the rematch, but this time for $100,000. The $100,000 prize pool from round one remains in the pot.
Daniel Negreanu might have cause to be concerned at this point. He’s taken a beating from Doug Polk and now proved himself unable to finish off a wounded Phil Hellmuth.
The poker fans shouldn’t be surprised though, because Phil Hellmuth is actually a master at this format. Only last year he smashed Antonio Esfandiari 3-0 on the same show.
He also showed that he was a match for Tom “durrrr” Dwan a decade ago when the kid was reputed to be the best NL heads-up player on the planet.
High Stakes Duel Is Most Exciting Poker TV Format
This PokerGO show is more exciting than the drawn out deep stacked cash game format. It definitely lends itself better to getting new fans into the game.
And what better pair of players to have battling it out on our screens. Negreanu and Hellmuth are long-time friends but have fallen out over the latter’s comments on the former’s performance against Doug Polk.
Poker players do tend to have large egos and criticising their play does tend to lead to some kind of a fall out. But what better way to sort that out than the traditional heads-up challenge.
High Stakes Duel II Round 2 will have a possible eight rounds with the final one being for an eye-watering $12.8 million!
