Fedor Holz launches poker app and poker coaching site
Fedor Holz has certainly been busy since his “retirement” from professional poker in 2016.
Since then, he created the poker app designed to improve your mental game called Primed Mind, made one episode of his podcast, and even modeled hoodies fro an Estonian clothing line with Patrik Antonius.
Evidently, he also managed to squeeze some major tournament scores in there as well, such as finishing 2nd in the 2008 WSOP $1 million buy-in One Drop for $6 million.
This time, he launched his poker coaching site Pokercode. For this occasion, he held a Q&A with his fans on Instagram.
Here are the best bits of it.

Fedor Holz Learnt a Lot from Phil Galfond and Steffen Sontheimer
What’s the best poker advice you ever received?
Fedor Holz: I’m very grateful actually for the group of people I’ve played with, specifically on Cherry Island. I’d have to think of Steffen Sontheimer, more specifically. He gave me a lot of advice around using HUD’s and how to think about the game more rationally, strategically, mathematically.
And I have to say watching Phil Galfond play, like, years ago online. When he was explaining how he played, it was just so fun. Blew my mind multiple times. The way he thinks about poker is just incredible.
What’s the World Series of Poker experience like?
Fedor Holz: It’s actually very interesting because every year has been a different experience for me. So, my first year I was super hyped to go there.
It changed over time a bit. The more I got to know, the more I played the tournaments, really spent multiple hundreds of hours on the grind, kind of changed my feelings around it. It more of became a job.
And then, there was the middle part when I didn’t really like to go to Vegas. And afterwards it became more enjoyable again when I had more friends there, and knew my way around, and knew who to hang out with.
Fedor Holz shares Words of Wisdom on Tilt
How do you deal with tilt & bankroll management?
Fedor Holz: Tilt is probably the thing that costs you the most in poker. I lost a lot of money tilting or anything that is closely related to it. Like being angry, not focusing properly, being in a bad mindset.
I think it’s specifically strong in poker because the multiplication of how much you lose when you’re tilted or when you play bad is so much more than how much you win when you play good.
That’s why it’s been always so important for me to stay focus, and not tilt, and get an advantage over my opponents there.
And that ties in really strongly with bankroll management. To have these principals, to not spend more than 1% of my bankroll on one tournament that I play.
There’s a lot of behaviors I had a couple years ago – like after I’d been losing money more constantly, put everything on in one tournament.
Do you think it’s possible to become a fulltime tournament player?
Fedor Holz: Simple question, very simple answer: I think it is possible. I think it’s very difficult to do properly, but yeah, it’s for sure possible.
It’s very important to be professional about it. Don’t treat as just something you do, really think about what you want to achieve. If you want to go full time, treat like any other full-time thing you would put your energy into.
Fedor Holz on How Professional Poker Changed Recently
What’s a good play to study ratio?
Fedor Holz: Most of the players when I started were basically just playing poker. The game was the only thing that mattered.
I think my group of friends, and the people around me, that was kind of the era when it started to become more relevant to exchange training videos, also hand histories, and finding groups of people you can grow with.
I think that was the moment when for most players it went from 5% strategy 95% playing to like 30% theory and 70% playing. And I would say that nowadays it’s even higher than that.
Right now, if I were to go about it again I would probably study about a third of the time and play two thirds of the time.
