We all know that Doug Polk is not afraid to throw some punches and get into some beefs with the biggest names in poker.
This time he was a lot less confrontational. However, he still engaged in some negative speculation about a true legend of the game – Phil Ivey.
Doug Polk on Phil Ivey’s Situation
Polk uploaded one of his usual poker news recap videos recently. In it, he covered the lead about Daniel “Jungleman” Cates staking Ivey and going after his share of his winning against Borgata.
However, at the end of that video, Doug Polk said this:
“I’m little surprised to see Ivey being backed in a $50,000 event. I mean, look, this is one of the guys who’s played the highest stakes, one of the biggest names in poker for such a long period of time. (…)
What seems likely is he’s in a bit of bind with some lawsuitsm and maybe with some private games going wrong, and Lord knows what happens on those streets.
The point is, when someone’s being backed for 50K buy-ins when they used to play the highest stuff, we should be a bit concerned with how they’re doing overall. Obviously, this is getting a little bit into the drama territory, but if Phil Ivey is being full backed for these 50K buy-ins I don’t think he’s doing too well on the felt.”
This doesn’t seem to be very generous from Doug Polk. Why would he assume Ivey’s alleged financial troubles are due to his failure at the poker table when he’s been in multiple highly publicized multi-million dollar lawsuits?
Also, it is a well-known fact that it’s common practice for high stakes poker pros to back each other to decrease the variance in their tournament results.
This quote may be backing people who believe “WCGRider” Polk likes to go after famous poker players for attention.
Doug Polk Lost $1 Million to Viktor “Isildur1” Blom in One Day
Doug Polk has also been recently back Joe Ingram’s popular podcast Poker Life.
There, he told the story of how he lost $1 million in a single day playing $400/$800 heads-up cash against Isildur on 4 tables. He went on to stress that on the long run, he in fact won a lot of money from Isildur, that day was just a sorrowful outlier for him.
Polk also touched on the subject of streaming. He claimed that streaming is not a sustainable career because it’s “winner-take-all”. By that he meant the top few percentage of creators have the majority of the viewership. Also, to get to the top you need to stream multiple hours every day, which, as Polk put it, “makes your life horrible”.
Prominent poker streamer Jaime Staples responded to him on Twitter voicing his disagreement.
I disagree @DougPolkPoker . I think the large majority of streamers don’t need to or even aspire to have a massive audience. Like having 100 viewers and the rev that comes from that is success. The bar you are setting for what is ‘worthwhile’ is relative to your level of success. https://t.co/BeZRgdZ22m

Doug Polk also covered a vast array of other subjects. He talked about his retirement from professional poker and the reasons behind it, GTO, and even his opinion about mainstream YouTube content.
