Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist and anti-corruption activist, who reported on government corruption, money laundering allegations and neptotism.
Caruana exposed high profile corruption involving Maltese public officials and businesses She also discovered links between Malta’s online gambling industry and organized crime.

Theuma gave a major testimony in exchange for immunity from prosecution and named Portomaso Casino CEO Yorgen Fenech as “the mastermind“ behind the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder.
Due to Theuma’s extensive testimony it also became apparent that the murder complot goes up to Malta’s highest political positions.
Melvin Theuma claims Casino Portomaso CEO Yorgen Fenech commissioned him to arrange the killing
Melvin Theuma claims Yorgen Fenech commissioned him to arrange the killing and that he paid €450,000 to the three suspects for executing the murder.
He also testified that the former chief of staff to the Prime Minister Keith Schembri has promised him a government for his efforts.
Keith Schmembri has resigned his position as chief of staff to the Prime Minister and many Maltese now also demand Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to resign, although there is no proove that he is linked to the murder.
Yorgen Fenech tries to flee the country by boat
Casino Portomaso CEO Yorgen Fenech was arrested shortly after Theuma’s testimony at the Portomaso marina, where he was trying to flee the country by boat.
His yacht was stopped by Armed Forces of Malta patrols as it left the Portomaso Marina early in the morning. Since that Yorgen Feneck is in police custody.
What is Yorgen Fenech accused of?
He is accused of the following:
- Complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia
- Complicity in causing an explosion
- Participating in a criminal organization
Fenech was the CEO of Tumas Group, who owns Portomaso Casino and Oracle Casino in Malta, Portomaso Gaming as well as several hopitality, property, development , transport and energyand management branches.
In addition to that, he is the owner of the Dubai-registered company 17 Black. The company was listed in the Panama Papers.
Daphne Caruana Galizia had written about the company before her death, alleging it had links to Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff Keith Schembri and to former energy minister Konrad Mizzi.
Yorgen Fenech is facing a life sentence
If Yorgen Fenech is found guilty, he will receive a life sentence due to the fact that complicity to murder carries the same punishment of first-degree murder according to Maltese law.
