Alex Foxen Lands $3.8million Triton Main Event Win in Paradise

Alex Foxen last night cemented his place at the top of the world elite by scooping the WSOP Paradise Triton Main Event, bagging not only $3,850,000  but also a gold bracelet and almost equally coveted Triton trophy.

The 182 entries at $100k per head, coming on the back of the $500,000 buy-in Triton Invitational won in sensational fashion by Argentine rapper Alejandro Lococo, was an excellent turnout.

Among the notable early bustouts were Lococo himself, last year’s winner Masashi Oya, and Chance Kornuth who fired off no less than four bullets in the hope of bagging one of the biggest prizes in poker.

Day two was payday and there were plenty of big names leaving without a visit to the cashier’s cage. Daniel Negreanu was one of those who didn’t make it to the top 31…

Daniel Negreanu: A♦ 8♣
Darren Elias: A♣ K♠

Elias had snapped off Negreanu’s small blind shove but a camera-wielding DNegs was undeterred, telling the dealer: “Your job is to just put the eight. However you want to do it.” Sadly, for both him and his fans, it wasn’t to be…

Turn: 5♣

River: 7♠

Patrik Antonius, Ike Haxton, Bryn Kenney and Kristen Foxen also came up short, as did Triton co-founder Paul Phua just two short of the paid spots, while Wayne Heung took bubbleboy status…

Those who cashed but didn’t trouble the final table included:

  • Michael Addamo (26th for $178,000)
  • Justin Bonomo (22nd for $196,500)
  • Jason Koon (16th for $242,000)
  • Stephen Chidwick (11th for $330,000)

Ossi Ketola held the chip lead going into the final table, the Finnish player a relative newcomer to the nosebleed MMT circuit, but he had already gained his spurs with a runner-up finish in Triton’s Monte Carlo spot.

Here in Paradise, Ketola took the first of the 7-figure payouts with a 5th place finish, falling to Alex Foxen when his shove with K♣ 10♠ was dominated by A♠ 10♦

He was followed to the rail by Russian Alexander Zubov, who lost a massive flip to Joao Vieira, his A♣ K♣ unable to catch the Portuguese pro’s pocket 5s.

That left a trio of absolute killers – Foxen and Vieira in the company of Fedor Holz, supposedly semi-retired but never far from the action when the biggest tournaments come around.

The three tussled for a while until Holz got it into his head that Foxen was on a river bluff for his entire stack… watch and see if you would have made the call for your tournament life and at least $760k!

Heads-up between Foxen and Vieira didn’t take long, a 3:1 chip lead and a hero call all-but-ending Vieira’s dreams…

Vieira: 10♥ 8♥

Foxen: 8♦ 3♦

Flop: 6♦ 3♠ A♣

Turn: 9♠

River: K♦

Vieira had fired pre- and on every street, his river shove sending Foxen briefly into the tank before he emerged with a call, the story somehow not making sense.

It was a winning call that left Vieira on fumes and a couple of hands later it was all over, Foxen bagging both his second Triton title and second WSOP gold bracelet of the year.

“It’s up there with my favorite poker moments, for sure, Foxen told reporters after his  victory. “To get the Triton Series trophy and WSOP bracelet at the same time, it’s unreal.”

Of his wife Kristen’s effect on his game, he explained: “It’s invaluable. I can’t even put it into words,” describing Kristen as “someone who… understands the game on the deepest level and understands me at the deepest level…”
