What is 5 Card Draw?
5 Card Draw is one of the oldest and classic poker games. It’s considered one of the simplest forms of poker, that’s why it is for many the first poker game they ever played.
It is still present in home games or casual settings as well as part of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) schedule.
5 Card Draw Poker Rules
5 Card Draw can be played by two to eight players and with a No-Limit, Pot-Limit or Fixed Limit betting structure.
Aim is to make the best 5-card poker hand at showdown or to make your opponents fold before that.
Before the start of each hand all players post an Ante. Then they are dealt five cards face down and the first round of betting, called Pre-Draw Round, starts.
If more than one player is left after it, there is the so-called “Draw”, hence the name 5 Card Draw, where the remaining players can discard some, all or none of their cards (Stand Pat).
As soon as all players have replaced their cards, the Draw phase ends and the second round of betting round begins.
If there are still more than one players left after the second betting round, then there is a Showdown.
At Showdown the winner of the hand is determined with the help of rhe poker hand ranking, which is the same as in Texas Hold’em.
5-Card Rules Summary
- 5-Card Draw is played by minimum 2 and maximum 8 players
- The game uses a Standard 52-card deck
- Players can discard none or all of their five hole cards
