In our Poker Hand of the Week we analyze a very sick hand from High Stakes Poker, where Brandon Steven turns his hand into a bluff and ends up rivering a full house in a huge pot against Rick Salomon on High Stakes Poker.

Poker Hand of the Week Setup

This very interesting poker hand was played in High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 10, which featured Jennifer Tilly, Rob Yong, Rick Salomon, JRB and Brandon Steven among others.

They are playing 7-max $200/$400 No-Limit Hold’em with a mandatory straddle. Salomon got Steven covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.

Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

The $800 straddle is on. Brandon Steven raises from middle position with 3♠3♥ to $3,000, Rick Salomon calls on the button with K♠4♠ and Justin Gavri defends his straddle with 9♣8♣. Pot Size: $10,100

Flop:

3-way to a spicy flop of 4♥Q♣4♦. Steven makes a $6,000 continuation bet with his Two Pair, and Salomon just calls with Trips, while Gavri gets out of the way. Pot Size: $22,100

Turn:

The 9♠ on the turn doesn’t changes much and now Brandon decides to turn his hand into a bluff by firing a $17,000 second barrel and Rick continues to slow playing with a call. Pot Size: $56,100

River:

The 3♦ is one of the sickest cards in the deck as Brandon Steven rivers a very well- disguised Full House.

He makes a large $50,000 value bet. Rick Salomon now springs the slow play and puts him All-in for $142,000 more, which Brandon obviously snap-calls.

Salomon takes the brutal beat very well and gives Brandon a fist bump, while the latter collects a huge $341,700 pot.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

What a sick hand! Let’s take an in-depth look to what happened here.

Since play is 7-handed, Brandon Steven’s open-raise from middle position with Pocket Threes is standard. Rick Salomon makes a loose call with Ks4s on the button.

The 4hQc4d flop is an absolute dream for Salomon as he flops disguised Trips. It checks to Steven, who understandably makes a cbet on this dry flop as he can have the best hand here. Once Rick calls, he however knows that this is not the case.

The 9s on the turn doesn’t change anything and now Brandon decides to turn his hand into a bluff with a second barrel to get higher Pocket Pairs (44 -88) to fold. Salomon continues his slowplay by just calling.

Brandon Steven then binks the Two-Outer on the river. In a spot like this, you should bet big and can easily overbet as your hand is very disguised.

Steven makes a large value bet of 89% pot and gets snap-raised All-In by Rick, who thinks he is springing the trap.

Easy call for Brandon, who got very lucky to win the biggest pot of High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 10 worth $341,700.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

As Brandon Steven says himself after the hand: “This was pretty lucky.”

However, Rick Salomon also let him get there by slowplaying.

Raising the flop would have been a good play as Rick’s hand is very disguised. He will get action from a lot of worse hands and at the same time make small and medium Pocket Pairs fold, which then couldn’t have turned into a Full House.
