Keir Sullivan, who rose to fame by destroying Jungleman with an epic 72 Offsuit Hero Call, is at it again! This time he owns Eric Persson with a huge bluff in a $178,750 pot at Big Bet Poker.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
This spectacular poker hand was played in the high stakes game at Big Bet Poker, which featured Patrik Antonius, Santhosh Suvarna, Ben Lamb, Charles Yu, Eric Persson and Nik Airball.
They are playing NL $200/$400 and Eric Persson has Keir Sullivan covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Keir Sullivan limps UTG with K♠Q♠, Charles Yu raises from the Hijack with A♦J♦ to $2,400 and Eric Persson 3-bets with 9♠9♥ from the small blind to $12,400.
When the action is back on Keir, he lmp-raises to $28,000. Yu gets out of the way and Persson makes the call. Just like that there is $61,600 in the pot preflop.
Flop:
Heads-up to a flop of 2♣3♠A♥, which both players can’t like too much. However, after 4-betting pre Sullivan makes a tiny $10,000 (16% Pot) continuation bet after being checked to.
Eric Persson is a non-believer and check-raises to $35,000 and Keir calls with King-high. Pot Size: $131,600
Turn:
The 2♠ on the turn is an interesting card as it gives Keir Sullivan the Nut Flush draw. Persson checks and Sullivan shoves All-In for his remaining $44,250 causing a quick fold from Eric Persson.
Keir Sullivan wins a huge $175,850 Pot with a courageous King-high All-In bluff.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Nice bluff! Let’s go through it step by step.
The foundation for the successful bluff is laid preflop, when Keir Sullivan limp-3-bets with KsQs after a raise and call.
I like this play, since KQs is a great hand for is as you are blocking a lot of strong hands such as KK, QQ, AK and AQ.
So it’s not that likely that the preflop raiser has a very strong hand as you would have to fold against a 5-bet shove.
In this case, Sullivan even gets rid of the preflop raiser and only the preflop caller Eric Persson with Pocket Nines sticks around, which is a great result.
The flop comes 2c3sAh and a dry Ace-high flop is perfectly suited for a continuation bet. This is what Keir does, but he goes very small (only 16%pot). Eric reads that as weakness and check-raises to $35,000, but Sullivan sticks around.
The 2s on the turn is a great card for Keir as he picks up the Nut Flush Draw and decent equity and fold equity and Persson checks to him.
That being said, he can now apply a lot of pressure by firing a second barrel. Sullivan goes for maximum pressure by shoving All-In for his remaining $44,250.
With $175,850 in the pot and only $44,250 to call, Eric Persson gets amazing pot odds of 4 to 1 on a call. means a call needs to be correct only every fifth time to make it profitable.
Furthermore, the turn paired the board, so if Eric’s hand was good on the flop it is still good on the river. That’s why it is very surprising that he folds very quickly.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
Sick bluff by Keir Sullivan, which only is successful though, as Eric Persson makes a couple of mistakes in this hand.
The first mistake is to check-raise an Ace-high flop with Pocket Nines against a limp-3-bettor, since Sullivan has all the strong Aces in his range and Persson doesn’t.
The second mistake is that, if you believe that your hand is good on the flop and then the board pairs on the turn, you should call the shove on the turn.
The reason being is that the board didn’t chance and that you are getting very favourable pot odds of 4 to 1.
