Poker Hand of the Week Action

Preflop:

The mandatory $4,000 straddle is on again. Andrew Robl raises UTG to $15,000 with A♠J♥, Rick Salomon just calls in the big blind with 10♠10♦ and Charles Yu defends his straddle with 7♣4♣. Pot Size: $48,000

Flop:

3-handed to the action flop of 3♣10♣5♥. Rick flops best with Top Set, which are the current Nuts, but Charles picks up a flush and straight draw, while Robl whiffs.

Nevertheless, he makes a $30,000 continuation bet after it was checked to him. Salomon now makes a large 4x check-raises to $125,000 and Charles check-calls. Robl folds. Pot Size: $328,000

Turn:

The 8♠ on the turn doesn’t change anything, and Salomon now leads big for $270,000.

Charles, who only $511K behind, decided to chase and makes the call. Pot Size: $868,000

River:

The A♥ oin the river is none of Yu#s outs. Rick Salomon puts him All-In straight away and Charles can’t call.

Rick Salomon wins the largest pot of High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 6 worth a massive $1,109,000.

Poker Hand of the Week Analysis

Let’s go through this big hand street by street.

Preflop is pretty standard. AJo is a raise 6-handed, Rick can call or raise with Pocket Tens and Charles gets extremely good odds with a Suited Gapper after Salomon called.

The 3c10c5h flop spells trouble for Yu, who flops a combo draw, as he is up against Top Set, the current Nuts. It checks around to Robl and his $30,000 continuation bet with air lays the foundation for this huge pot.

Rick then check-raises big to $125,000. Charles now has two options: Call or go All-In.

The second option has the advance that he has the turn and river to complete his draw and that he can realize his fold equity in case Rick is making a move.

However, he just calls. Most likely because Salomon’s check-raise against Robl UTG preflop raise and cbet is a sign of great strength.

The 8s on the turn is a blank and this is the most interesting street of this hand as Rick leads for $270K, which is more than half of Yu’s remaining $511k stack.

So the big question here is: Can Charles call profitably? Let’s do the math!

Yu has 11 outs, since we need to discount the 5 and 8 of clubs. He has to call $270,000 to win $598,000 giving him pot odds of only 2.2 to .

Charles would need 4 to 1 to break-even making this a clear fold on the turn. Yu does however call.

The river bricks and Salomon has an easy shove. Yu obviously has to fold with 7-high after having invested 67% of his stack.

Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion

Charles made a big mistake in the hand, which lead to this massive pot.

On the turn he has a clear fold, since Salomon bets close to pot size and he therefore simply doesn’t get the right odds to call.

Missteps prove costly in No-Limit Hold’em, also in this example. All the draws bust on the river and Charles has to fold after having invested more than two thirds of his stack.
