In our Poker Hand of the Week we analyze the biggest pot from the latest episode of High Stakes Poker Season 11 worth a whopping $893,000 between Ferdinand Putra and Rick Salomon.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
This huge pot was played in High Stakes Poker Season 11 Episode 5, which featured Ferdinand Putra, Rick Salomon, Andrew Robl, Rob Yong, Charles and JRB.
They are playing the highest limits in High Stakes Poker History with NL$2,000/$4,000 6-max No-Limit Hold’em.
Players are very deep with more than $6,000,000 at the table. Putra has Salomon easily covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
There is a mandatory $4,000 straddle and Ferdinand Putra raises UTG to $11,000 with A♣2♣.
Rick Salomon picks up K♠K♥ on the button and 3-bets to $41,000. Putra calls and everybody else folds. Pot Size: $89,000
Flop:
Heads-up to the action flop of 2♥2♦7♦, which gives Ferdinand Putra well-disguised Trips and Rick Salomon and overpair. Ferdinand checks and Rick makes a standard continuation bet of $50,000 (56% pot). Putra check-calls. Pot Size: $189,000
Turn:
The 10♥ on the turn is a blank and Ferdinand checks for a second time. Rick now bets $200,000 with only $152,000 behind.
When the action is back on Ferdinand Putra, he check-raises All-In and Rick Salomon quickly calls. Just like that there is a staggering $893,000 in the pot.
River:
They agree to run the river twice. Salomon only has two outs and neither the 8♠ nor the 5♦ is one of them.
Ferdinand Putra wins a huge $893,000 Pot and Rick Salomon has to reload.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s go through the hand step by step.
Since they are playing 6-max, the preflop raise of Ferdinand Putra with Ac2c is ok, even though it’s a little bit on the loose side, since he is Under The Gun. Salomon then has an easy 3-bet with Pocket Kings and Putra calls as his hand plays well postflop.
The flop of 2h2s7d is absolute gin for Ferdinand, since his Trips are very well-disguised and Salomon has no reason not to believe that his overpair is the best hand.
Ferdinand decides to slow play his hand on the flop by check-calling, which is the right move as Rick can’t put him on a Deuce after his 3-bet preflop.
The 10h on the turn doesn’t change anything and Putra continues his slow play be checking for a second time.
Note that there is already $189,000 in the pot and Rick has only $352K behind. Salomon now overbets the pot by betting $200,000 into $189,000 committing himself to the pot.
Ferdinand Putra now only has one play left and that is check-raising All-In, which is what he does. Rick snap-calls just to see that he only has two outs.
Putra is a 96% favourite before the river is dealt twice and Rick Salomon fails twice to hit one of his few outs, while Ferdinand takes down a huge $893,000 Pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
Nasty spot for Rick Salomon. The only probable hands that beat him and that are in Putra’s range, after 3-betting his UTG raise preflop, are Pocket Tens and Pocket Sevens.
Since Rick Salomon started the hand with only 111 big blinds there is no escaping going broke here.
