Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
What a Call by Tyler Brown! Let’s try to find out why he made it.
The preflop raise on the button wih A5o is heads-up as standard as Chen’s defend with K9o.
The flop of 2d3s3h rainbow is very dry. Guang checks to Tyler, who makes a small and nice continuation bet of 25% pot. I like this sizing as it serves two purposes: Firstly, you often win the pot right here and secondly it induces bluffs by the opponent.
This is exactly what happens as Chen makes a large 4x check-raise. The problem of this play is that Guang can’t rep much on this board.
With the check-raise he is basically saying he has a Three, unlikely as only two are left in the deck, or a Pocket Pair, which is even more unlikely since Guang would have 3-bet pre. Brown is suspicious as well and makes the call.
The Qs on the turn doesn’t change much and Guang decides to pull the trigger by shoving All-In. Brown goes into the tank for almost 90 seconds and after that he flicks in the call.
And what a call it is as Ace-High is good making Brown an 86% favourite before the river. Chen only has six outs and needs a King or a Nine.
No King or Nine on the Qh river and Tyler Brown cripples Chen Guang with the best call of the 2023 WSOP to take a decisive lead and went on to win his first bracelet.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
In poker, the following rule applies: If a play doesn’t makes sense then it is more often than not a bluff.
The check-raise on the flop by Chen, after having just called preflop, simply doesn’t make much sense. A Three he would most likely slow play and you can eliminate pocket pairs from his range, since he would have 3-bet pre.
This means that Ace-high very often is the best hand here. However, with $1,000,000 on the line and a bracelet up for grabs you need to be sure your read is right and have big balls to make the call on top.
Bravo Tyler Brown!
