In our Poker Hand of the Week we analyze the Fold of the Year by YoH Viral against Jiang in the $1,000/$2,000 high stakes cash game at the WPT World Championship.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
This hand was played at the $1,000/$2,000 high stakes cash game at the WPT World Championship, which featured Phil Ivey, Jungleman, Ben Lamb and French local hero YoH Viral.
The blinds are $500/$1,000 with a $2,000 Ante and Jiang has YoH Viral slightly covered.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Jiang raises from UTG+2 to $3,000 with K♦K♠ and YoH Viral looks at A♦A♥ in the cut-off. He 3-bets to $11,000 and Jiang comes back over the top to $38,000 and the Frenchman calls. And just like that there is already $79,500 in the pot before the flop is even dealt. Pot Size: $79,500
Flop:
Heads-up to a sick flop of K♣2♠3♦, which gives Jiang Top Set, while YoH still has an overpair on a dry rainbow flop. Jiang makes a tiny $10,000 continuation bet and YoH Viral raises to $42,000, which is called by the Chinese. Pot Size: $163,500
Turn:
The 7♦ on the turn is a blank and Jiang leads once again this time for $45,000. YoH Viral, who has only $122K behind, tanks for a few seconds and then folds the Aces! Jiang collects a $163,500 pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
What a fold by Yoh Viral! Let’s take an in-depth look at it.
Seeing a 4-bet preflop is absolutely standard given that we have the setup of all setups Aces versus Kings. Viral could definitely 5-bet or even 5-bet shove here, but that would look extremely like Aces and give away the strength of his hand that’s why he just calls.
The flop is as sick as it gets as it does come King-high and is very dry. Jiang now makes a very small cbet of $10,000 (only 13% pot) to induce a raise from YoH. It works as the French raises to $42,000 and this time it is Jiang, who sets the trap by just calling.
The turn is a blank and now the Chinese makes a decisive mistake by snap-leading again for $45,000. This is a sign of extreme strength and top of the range after the previous action.
YoH Viral realizes that and goes into the tank. He knows that if he calls here he is pot-committed, since he only has $122k behind.
After approximately 50 seconds in the tank YoH folds his hand leaving the commentators stunned.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
One of the best folds ever by Yoh Viral, who gets away from Pocket Aces on the turn of a dry board, but why did he fold?
The answer is, because his opponent made a decisive mistake, which gave away the strength of his hand. After 4-betting preflop and getting raised on the flop, he snap-leads the turn, which is almost always the Nuts.
Would he have checked the turn and led Yoh Viral bet at it, then he would have gotten all of the chips of the Frenchman as he would have been pot-committed.
