Tom Dwan and Rui Cao play the sickest cash game hand of all time in a massive €894,000 Pot at the Triton Super High Roller Series Madrid 2022.
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
We are at the massive €1,000/€2,000 Triton NHL Cash Game Madrid, which was featuring poker superstars Tom Dwan, Tony G, Timothy Adams and Rui Cao.
There is a huge €10,000 Bounty per player, if you win a hand with 7-2 and Tom Dwan has Rui Cao easily covered at the start of the Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Tony G straddles making this game effectively NL€2,000/€4,000. Tom Dwan picks up 7♠2♣ in the cut-off and makes it €12,000 to go. Rui Cao then 3-bets to €36,000 on the button with 8♣7♥.
Everybody except for Tom Dwan folds, who decides to go for the massive €10k bounty. Pot Size: €83,000
Flop:
Heads-up to a flop of A♦5♥Q♠. Dwan checks and Rui Cao makes a €30,000 continuation bet.
Tom Dwan now makes a large check-raise to €126,000 with the aim of ending the hand right here, but Cao calls. Pot Size: $335,000
Turn:
The A♣ turn brings another Ace and Tom Dwan continues to represent it with a large €160,000 second barrel, but Cao calls again! Pot Size: $655,000
River:
K♠ on the river and Dwan gives up by checking. Rui Cao only has 8-high himself and therefore thinks he needs to bluff at it and this is what he does by shoving All-in for €239,000.
Tom Dwan can’t do anything else but fold at this point and Rui Cao shows him 87o collecting a massive $894,000 pot, while everybody at the table completely erupts.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
This has to be the sickest cash game hand of all time! Let’s go through it step by step.
Since Tom Dwan picks up 7-2 in late position and there is a massive €10,000 bounty per player, he understandably tries to steal the pot. However, Rui Cao 3-bets him from the button. Dwan could just fold here, but decides to see a flop and go for the bounty instead.
The Ace-high flop heavily favours the preflop 3-bettor and Rui consequently makes a continuation bet. Now “durrrr” takes his shot with a large 4x check-raise intended to take down the pot right here, but it doesn’t work as Cao calls.
After another Ace shows up on the turn and with all that money in the pot, Dwan decides to continue to represent it with a half pot second barrel. However, Rui Cao doesn’t do him the favour to fold and calls again with just 8-high!
On the river, Tom Dwan then gives up. This is a mistake in my opinion, since Rui Cao only has 1/3 pot behind.
Who says A must say B in poker and the better option would have definitely been to follow through and to tell the story to its end.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
This hand shows how dangerous the 7-2 Game is. It does drive the action, but on the other hand it pushes you to bluff and risk much more.
Here the bounty per player is a whopping €10,000, which means you get a staggering €60,000, if you win a hand with 7-2.
Tom Dwan goes for it and even tells a credible story on a board that heavily favours the preflop raiser.
However, Dwan’s big mistake was that he simply picked the wrong opponent. Rui Cao is famous for being sticky as well as making big calls and bluffs. Against another opponent this bluff probably would have worked, but trying it against a maniac like Rui Cao was a very bad idea and proved costly.
