Eric Persson and Matt Hanks have been clearly driving the action at No Gamble, No Future. Last week Persson won a huge $830,000 Pot from Hanks, but now it is his time to take revenge!
Poker Hand of the Week Setup
No Gamble, No Future is THE new high stakes cash game format and features action players JRB, Eric Persson, Alan Keating and Matt Hanks among others.
They are playing NL$200/$400 with straddle and re-straddle, which is effectively NL$800/$1,600! Matt has Eric clearly covered at the start of our Poker Hand of the Week.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
After a straddle and re-straddle to $1,600 and two calls, Alan Keating makes it $11,600 to go from the big blind with A♣Q♠. He gets three callers including Eric Persson with K♥3♥ and Matt Hanks with J♣8♣. Pot Size: $47,600
Flop:
4-way to an action flop of 3♣9♣K♣. Matt Hanks flops the flush, while preflop raiser Alan Keating has the nut flush draw and an overcard and Persson Two Pair.
Keating bets $20,000 and both Hanks and Persson just call. Pot Size: $107,600
Turn:
The A♦ on the turn is another interesting card and now it is Eric Persson, who comes out firing with a $35,000 pot and Keating calls.
When the action comes back to Matt Hanks, he check-raises to $115,000 and Eric snap-shoves for $244,000 and gets insta-called by Hanks. And just like there is a staggering $630,800 in the middle.
River:
Eric Persson only has four outs and the 8♥ is not one of them, sending Persson to the rail, while Matt Hanks collects a massive $630,800 pot.
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
Let’s take go through this spectacular hand.
First of all, one of the reasons why this pot gets so big to start with is the straddle and re-straddle to $1,600. Because of that, there is a lot of dead money in the pot and this also leads Alan Keating to make a large 7x squeeze to pick it up. However, he gets three callers!
The flop is a very interesting as it gives 3 out of 4 players a strong hand. Matt Hanks flops best with the flush, while Eric Persson has Two Pair and Alan Keating the nut flush draw plus overcard, so none of them can fold at this point.
When the Ace of Diamonds shows up on the turn, Persson decides to lead for one third pot, Keating calls with top pair and nut flush draw and Hanks check-raises followed by a snap-shove by Persson, which gives Keating the chance to escape.
Matt obviously calls with the flopped Flush and is a massive 91% favourite going into the river as Eric only has four outs.
No help from the board and Hanks wins a huge $630K pot, while Persson is busto.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
This hand is a perfect example, how much action a straddle and re-straddle creates in a live cash game. Three players, who all have mediocre hands at best, call Alan Keating’s large 7.25 x preflop raise in order to fight for the dead money. Then an action flop comes and all the money goes in on the turn.
The important question about this hand is however, if the shove by Eric Persson on the turn is a mistake and I say yes!
There was a lot of action preflop, on the flop and especially on the turn. After a bet, a call and a big check-raise, there are simply too many hands on the turn that beat K3 such as all flushes, sets and most of the Two Pair combinations.
After leading out on the turn, getting called by Keating and then check-raised big by Matt Hanks, Persson doesn’t beat much and could have gotten away from his hand.
